How to know if I need a new Knock Sensor??!

I've read countless threads about knock sensor replacement/diagnostics/etc... and I still have a question. How do I know if replacing my knock sensor is worth it? I know it can go bad slowly and sometimes cause inconsistent performance etc... and usually it doesn't throw codes as far as I can determine. Some days my car feels noticeably faster than other days, but maybe that's just because of air temp etc...
I can't justify dropping money on a new knock sensor if I don't know if my old one is bad... My car has 135K miles on it... any suggestions/advice?
Oh, and IF I do replace it, where is the best place to buy a new one at the best price? (and how much are they?)
Thanks.

Yup, buy a $35 code reader on ebay and it will tell you if you have a bad knock sensor

But I've read that an intermittently failing or partially failed KS won't necessarily throw ANY codes...

Even when failed a KS doesn't affect performance a whole lot unless you are looking at track times. It basically defaults to the settings for regular gas instead or premium. It just retards your timing slightly.

I bought my last couple of KS for my old Max's on ebay, they have been good for a couple years now. I think they were $40 or so. 4th gen cars go through Ks, starters and alternators like you'd think they were regular maintenance items.

Knock sensor wont turn on the SES light. But as soon as the computer detects a failure in the sensor/circuit, it will store a code. Read your codes and replace knock sensor if there is a code stored. I buy all my non-performance stuff from the dealer(since i work there). Part#220602Y000 list price of $193 though. Yikes
