mystery rattle at top of windshield?

ive had this weird rattling noise coming from somewhere in the front dash area for a few months now. at first i just assumed it was a leaf or something stuck in the vents and it would eventually dislodge itself.

a few days ago i decided it was enough. it seemed to get louder when i was driving at higher speeds. so i did a pretty thorough inspection (while driving) to located the noise. this is what i found:

- the noise is coming from the top middle of the windshield, where it meets the roof of the car.

- the noise INCREASES in volume the faster i go.

- if i press the base of the rear view mirror (where it attaches to the roof), the noise disappears

so this is obviously some kind of leak that allows wind in, but there is never a moisture problem when it rains.

how do i fix this? what could this be?

thanks.

possibly loose wires from the sunroof/map light?, or a loose cover or screw for the rear view?, maybe it increases with speed because of rood defection with wind speed... just my $0.02

I too have this same problem. I just got my 1996 SE and am going over some of the quirks it has. Until I got to highway speeds I didn't know it did this. I'll post what I find out once I do some work to it (it's been cold!).

hi fellas!

I have a 95, two weeks ago I was driving from Columbus, OH to Dallas, TX and I noticed the same rattling sound you guys seem to be experiencing, in my case it was the top windshield edge trim, it was missing a couple of its retaining clips and it was fractured beyond repair, you might not be able to notice at a glance but if you inspect it closely you might find your problem.

I had to take mine out entirely, now I need to find a replacement, I found some generic chrome ones on e-bay but my maxima's trim is all black, would appreciate some info on how to find the right kind.

Thanks and good luck!
