Cabin gas smell

Alright the last two day i have noticed a strong smell of gas in the car when i have it warm up in the morning.. I've search the thread for similar problems and most of them are saying that they smell gas on the outside of the car also. I.ve check the lines and couldn't seem to find any leaks. I looked in the engine bay and there isn't even any smell of gas.. Yesterday I poped the trunk and it was pretty srtong in there also.. Could this problem be from the charcoal canister??

Any exhaust leaks or CELs? If you're running too rich, you're spraying fuel that goes unburnt; that can manifest itself as cabin smell. A fouled O2 sensor might booger your tune and an exhaust leak might make you more likely to smell it (though even without leaks it can be quite noticeable).

If the car is running rich, you better get that fixed before your catalytic converter gets plugged up.

You questioned the charcoal evap canister and I don't think that would do it. The evap canister it used to filter the gas fumes out of the fuel tank. To do this, it has a vacuum line from the engine connected to it as well as an air intake with its own little air filter.

Look underneath at the gas tank area and see if you can see anything like water stains that would be a sign of gasoline leaking. Check the gas filler tube because it is sort of in the trunk. Also, how full is the gas tank? Is the problem only when the tank is full, only when more than half full? Things like that.

The smell started on monday morning when I went to let it warm up.. At that time there was a little lees then 1/2 a tank of gas. I filled it up yesterday and this morning it had the same smell in the cabin.. I poped the trunk again and the smell was pretty strong in the too. I also read that the breather hose that goes from the gas tank to the filler head can crack and sometime you can get the same smell inside.. I'll check tonight and see if i see any stain the only thing is we've had snow on the ground so wouldn't it be kinda hard to tell??

Thanks for all of the tips guys.

had the same issue..first off, DO NOT fill your tank..in my case, I had the seal(O-ring) from the gas tank busted..which was allowing fumes to rise into the cabin..you can access this seal by removing the BOTTOM of your backseat

I had a similar thing

But fumes were coming in through heater when engine cold. Was told by many that it could be cracked hoses since the hoses expand when warm the smell then goes away.

Your situation is a little more involved, since its in the rear and you have the smell in your trunk.

Hope the others suggestions on your O-ring work. Not sure if you've tracked any hoses but with the whole "only smells when warming" up it made me think of my own problem (which I haven't taken the time to solve, but everyone seems to agree its a hose issue)

not the bottom of the car..the fuel tank is accessible from the INSIDE of the car..the BOTTOM (butt) part of the REAR seat

mine does that too! I don't try to fit as much gas as possible in the tank. once the pump shuts off leave it at that. I have fixed the seal on the gas tank but there is something about it that is defective. So to avoid the smell i just don't fill up my tank to the max.

Ok, if you smell it through your heater. is it a Sweet smell? Antifreeze smells sweet and if thats happening inside the car your heater core might need to be replaced. I would also keep an eye on your coolant levels and maybe check your thermostat. also would recommend doing a pressure test on your cooling system. The radiator cap should state the recommended pressure(s)

Thanks guy's for the help. My car threw a curve ball yesterday.. So i was getting ready to go for a ride and the car did not want to start after a few minutes it finally started running rich as hell.. I popped the hood and could smell a little bit of gas by the injectors then i noticed what looked like a gas stain by the intake manifold right above the gasket.. Could this be another reason why I'm smelling gas inside the cabin?? Also the other wierd thing is that if i turn off the recirculation button off or the air i don't get the smell at all???

What about the gas filler tube?

Few months ago, I was getting the same strong gas smell in the cabin. Didnt get a clue until I was at the gas station one day, when the guy waiting behind me said that he saw gas dripping from the bottom of my car as I filled it up. Took it to my shop, and popped off the gas filler tube cover (left rear wheel well - 4 or five screws). The whole tube was rusted, and the place on the tube where it attached to the chassis was rusted clear through. Replaced that tube and saw the drips and the gas fumes in the cabin go away. Cost $25.

Yes, that's why you are getting the fumes inside the cabin. The air is being pulled through from there so you will smell it.
