passenger airbag stays on sometimes
passenger airbag stays on sometimes
when a passenger sits in the passenger seat (properly) and has their seatbelt and all (or off, it doesnt matter) 1 out of 5 times, the airbag light will stay on for x amount of time. it usually goes off, but usually for 5 minutes, it'll stay on.
we took it to the dealer, and they couldn't reproduce the problem... I took a picture of us on the highway doing around 80 with the light on to prove it DOES go on and STAY on.
does anyone else have this problem?
what makes the light go on?

I set my little lunch cooler I take to work everyday on the passenger seat. The light will go on and off several times during my 30 min ride to and from work. It weighs less than 5lbs.
I will have them check it out when it gets towed to the dealer hopefully tomorrow. It wont start, it seems something is wrong with the intelligent keys.
I would have started a thread but I dont have enough posts yet.

From what I've been told it is designed to sense if someone is in the seat at a certain weight so if no one is in the seat and you get into a collision, the airbag will not deploy to save on damage costs and repairs.
Wow! 140 lbs? So if your girlfriend or wife weighs 115 lbs she won't be protected by the airbag?

plus, that light is on if there is a problem, or it has been SHUT OFF. I think it can be triggered if there is weight on the seat, but no seatbelt.
you don't see that light on there when nobody is sitting, do you? that's because it's not supposed to come on then.
The only time I've noticed this is when my seat belt wasn't fastened "all the way." I unfastened and then fastened and the light went out. Can't say it is chronic, but I did notice it twice. Both times, refastening the passenger seat belt resolved the issue and I weigh 250! (or course the reason I may not have fastened it correctly is that my bride was driving after I had a few adult beverages so I can't attest to my coordination skills while buckling up!)
FACT:This is a KNOWN issue. Been to dealer and they said it depends on the weight and the location of the seat in relation to the air bag dash. But I was told 90lbs. well we know thats a lie because my fiance is 130 and we have the trouble about every 5 times that she sits in the seat. The dealer even put different people in to test it and they had the problem with the smaller persons. my nissan service person was one of them maybe 110lbs and it would not go off for her. but latrger person it would. NOW if you put the car in park say and the next light if there is one the sensor will recheck is what i was told. Personally this is a design flaw looks to be. But then maybe the force of the BAG flying out to stop the person would do more damage than good. I dont know but there has to be a better explanation. Looks like it time to write a letter to nissan.. Ill bet the 2011 model will get a change.
I also found that if you take it out of park before someone sits in the seat it wont go off, for it thinks no one is there. No im not having them jump in while im driving. I might have my foot on the break or another example... Just pulled up to chat to them on the street and they got in as i still had it in drive but the break was on. And no i am not a JOHN looking for a good time.
So the more people take it in to have it looked at the faster it will get resolved.

Does anyone even read the owners manual anymore. I know is boring as hell but it has a couple of detailed sections on the air bags and how they work. Weight of the passenger has nothing to do with the warning light activating and staying on or coming on intermidently while driving. Weight has a detirmining factor on weither the air bag is activated or not. If the sensors detect a child or small adult it will keep the air bag turned off to lessen the damage that could be caused in a deployment. If this warning light comes on and stays on for more than 7 seconds or intermidently come on, or does not come on at all, it is telling you that front air bag, side and curtin air bags and pretensoiner seat belt systems need servicing. Unless this system is checked and repaired the entire supplemental restraint system may not function properly.

Yeah, the 11 got a change. Down to 105 Lbs.
My girl weighs 93.
SCREWED.
Yeah I also have the same problem, My girl was riding in the passenger seat and I seen that light and I immediately didnt feel comfortable. Im going to ride to Nissan and see what version of reason they give me.

Yeah... #uck you buddy. YOU tell my girlfriend to sit in the back and I will watch the castration ensue.
That should be able to be tuned or something, or some REAL explanation as to why it is a certain weight.
Had the same problem, bought the car new had it 8weeks and then it was in the shop for 6 weeks trying to figure out the air bags….my wife and I would be going down the hwy and all of a sudden the air bag light would come on and she has been sitting in the sit for the past 15 miles, took it to the dealership and they couldn’t find anything wrong….so I video it the next time it did it….long story short they bought the 2010 back and gave me a 2011 and told me its something wrong with the 2010 said ok and life was good……well we drove this 2011 for about 7 months and guess where it is now….back in the shop cause of the same ^&%$ thing and I have video of this one also….. I have been a fireman for 20 years and took classes on how airbags work and how they save lives….this is the 2nd car with two different year models with in the same year, with the same thing going wrong… I DO NOT WANT MY FAMILY OR ANYBODY in this car if the airbags might work or might not….still waiting on Nissan to figure out what they are going to do…..but I do not want this car back….can’t trust something that is telling you something is wrong
Maxima 2013 Passenger SRS failure
I have 2013 maxima with ~7k miles. The passenger airbag status light lite up a few times (6 to be exact). The car is used mostly for commute to work approximately 2 miles. But whenever I drive my wife (112 lbs) around, the passenger status would light up.
Brought in to dealer service twice and they can't seem to replicate the problem and was told not to do anything to it by Nissan USA. Contact Nissan USA and they told me that they rely on dealer to diagnose and fix issue.
I have pictures and video to prove that the passenger SRS failed multiple times. This is a major safety issue. Have anyone have any success with fixing the issue.
Please help!!

Same issue here. After about five minutes the light will go off (passenger airbag now on), so it is difficult to say what is the exact cause despite weight being the most obvious factor. However, the same issue occurred with a male friend, and within about a minute the light went away. I haven't had a trip yet where the light is on the entire time, but I've seen it come on and then turn off in the middle of a trip.
