Sorry for the stupid, perhaps even ignorant, thread. I just got a new leather boot for my 98 and I need to remove the **** **** to put it on. I read somewhere that you can use vice grips and a towel, but it seems really hard to unscrew. My question is, how much torque can i put on the shifter before something breaks. I havent tried the vice grip method yet, but i cant for the life of me unscrew it with my hands. Any input is appreciated, and flamers are welcomed, as I know there will be some. i just dont want to cause any damage to my shift linkage. Thanks

 

You wont damage the linkage. Just go to town on that damn ****.

 

pretty sure theres loctite or something of the sort on the threads. mine was impossible to remove i just saw the **** down the middle so i could pull it off.

i wouldn't do that if its in good condition though.

 

I used a wash cloth and big channel lock pliers. Mine was tight as hell, but it came loose with no damage.

 

yea...go to town, you wont break the linkage...if you break metal before you break plastic....good luck to ur future builds haha

 

jar opened will make quick work of that shift ****

 

I used a monkey wrench and a rag wrapped around the ****.

 

So I tried with vice grips and a towel, but just ended up tearing the threads on the leather shift ****. Guess I just need a new one. But the **** is still on. Dammit

 

dont you just turn unscrew it off with your hand? That's how I got my **** off my 03 Sentra

 

yeah, mine is the same way. I can unscrew it without any effort


Maybe if it's the first time removing it since the Nissan factory placed it on...it's much more difficult.

its cuz u are tryin to unthread at the top of the ****.

U have to turn at the base of the ****. The threading inside the **** is very shallow.

 

Towel to cushion it and a big pipe wrench to provide the leverage. It will come off.

 

well i finally got the damn thing off. big pair of channel locks and one hell of a grip got it done. i still am using my shredded stock ****, while my new one, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWNX%3AIT, is on the way. Thanks for the help everybody!

 

I've been trying to get mine off, and ripped the threads on the **** as well. Wanting to get a new one and get that area cleaned up a bit!

 

Why did you want to take it off so badly if you didnt have the new one yet?

 

A small shop rag and a set of channel locks. Nothing should get damaged if you apply force gently. The rag will prevent the **** from getting torn up by the channel lock.

 

I used the rubber strap wrench and that already torn off the threads

so I bared the shift **** and undressed it (lol) and then used a vise grip. voila. Original shift **** no longer usable though.

 

Meh, I personally don't like the stock 4th gen shift **** much. I ditched mine for a Nismo aluminum ****.

 

I have a short throw shifter and def couldn't use the stock **** it was notchy did a poly bushings and a weighed arc **** and I'm happy with it
