Just passed my NYS inspection WITH Y pipe

Here some comparsions between last year and this year for HC,CO, NOx;

US Fed. Legal Limits: 0.80, 15.00, and 2.00

Maxima w/o Y (last year): 0.13, 1.66, and 0.70

Maxima with Y (this year): 0.62, 7.82, and 0.25

As you can see, my hydrocarbon & carbon monoxide emissions went up quite a bit, and my NOx went down?

One last note, my car sat outside the inspection garage for 4 hours in 40 degree weather with the engine off all that time and still passed after all that.

I'm kinda curious what it means myself, because as you guys know I love my gas mileage. We'll see how the bad-boy does this holiday season, but I'm thinkin' 30+ mpg again.

From an environmental standpoint, the change in your motor is bad. But I'm wondering if it means it's performing better, worse, or the same. How's the acceleration and mpgs?

btw How do the cops know which areas in NYS need emissions, and which areas/counties are they? I don't think even Poughkeepsie/Newburgh has emissions, which is kinda curious. You guys are lucky you don't pay $68/year like we do for state inspections. Commonwealth = rip off!!

Re: hmmm

FIY: After I got my new RT cat, my emissions went to barely registable. But be carefull, Wa. state doesn't have a regulation for nox limits. I don't know if the RT cat will help there. But the RT cat did a very good job in reducing the other two. But 3-gens w/ Y pipes not make any differences as don't have pre-cats anyway.

New York State 68$?

In NYC i pay 35$. for 70$ my 3rd gen passed with double the NOx limit

My car may be young because of it's year, but my digital Odo just clocked 120,000 miles. Maybe I got more miles on my car than you

Re: Re: Just passed my NYS inspection WITH Y pipe

Yeah, my car is a little more dirty, but at least I didn't gut my cat

By the way, both my emissions tests, last year and this year, was with an RT CAT. the only change was the Y.

As for change in my car's character, the Y pipe has REALLY helped my top end. The Y pipe and CAI really compliment each other. The top of 3rd, 4th and 5th gear are much stronger. I can't go back to stock pipe, I just can't!

My mileage is pretty much the same. I once got 33 mpg on my car. Lazily driving around in 5th gear between 40 and 50 mph for a very very long time. IF, I wanted to do it again, I know I can. Way too boring, though. I had beautiful scenery to keep me occupied on a small country road.

I paid $35 for my inspection in elmsford, right next to tarrytown, or the tappan zee bridge.

I just had my NYC instection, the car is all stock. The numbers are HC = 0.19
CO = 7.89
NOx = 1.01

Is it me or my CO is very high?

Oh, they told me that when they put the car on the Inspection machine that my car ran out of gas and they had to run and get some gas. They might have used the cheap stuff. I only put 93 octane in my baby.

Maybe it's a sign that your cat converter may be on its way out. Your numbers are pretty much like mine with the Y pipe. I used to think that it was the Y pipe that was responsible for the change on my car, but sinceyou are stock, I'm re-thinking it. Probably the cat on my car, too. Do you do alot of highway driving?? I do. Actually more like autobahn driving, so my driving habits are working my exhaust system quite hard

I just bought the car about 7 days ago. WHen they were doing inspection I think that they put in some cheap grade gas cause my car didnt have enough. That could be the problem.

Yeah, I 've heard you like velocity too, but the day we go cruising together is the day I may as well just give my license to the trooper and be done with it

A little off subject...just a little. What exhaust mods do you have? (i.e. Y-pipe clearly, high flow cat, cat back)

WHo'd you hear that from... nothing beats blowing by a Suffolk County Cop doing 95 MPH and having someone else get pulled over cause the cop knew he couldn't catch us... hahahaha.. and then interrogate the other guy about me. LOL!! Sorry, I shouldn't be laughing that someone else got pulled over... it was just funny how it happened.

Anyways... I am more of a twisties guy believe it or not. Anyone that has ridden with me can tell you that. Hence the reason I praise the Quaife so Highly.

Have you guys heard about the metal substrate cats yet? WSP is selling them now I guess. I wonder how the compare to some of the high flow cats in neutralizing exhaust fumes...

Sounds promising. I wonder how much hp it could free up. RT cats and others only free up 1or 2, and you'll never notice that. If I had to do it all over again, though, I would leave the stock cat in there and only think of replacing it with aftermarket only when the OEM starts to fail. It would be my very last mod.

awesome!
I don't have to worry because all emmisions are void until they change around the system here in CT. Not like mine is due yet anyway (figures).

I am hoping the emissions are ok on my car anyway, even with the Y and all the goodies.

I just had my emissions checked.

RPM: 1009
HC: 4 PPM
CO: 0.00 %
CO2: 14.9 %
O2: 0.0 %

The guy said it's one of the cleanest burning 1992's he's ever seen. They did two tests just to make sure they were accurate. Yeap, they were. I have I/Y/adv timing.
