Was wondering if anybody has tried using the OEM resonator with an aftermarket system. Cutting the ends off and just welding you pipe wether it be 3" or 2.5 to the ends. I mean cutting the smaller pipe out and welding the larger pipe to the new muffler. Would it flow well? Or is it pretty restrictive? I thought the bad thing was the tiny pipe and all the kinks in them. Was maybe considering going with a 3" BRM minus the resonator he ships it with.

 

Well a 3" catback to a "stock" muffler would have the same backpressure as full stock exhaust. Why not just buy a generic magnaflow, thrush or like walker SS. Resonater come in tons of different options I put them.on cars at work all the time

 

I was talking about only using the stock resonator with an aftermarket system. The OEM resonator flows that bad?

 

I would imagine it's pretty restrictive given how utterly quiet a stock Maxima is...

 

If you've ever looked at it, the pipes off the resonator are te most restrictive part of the entire system. The pipe coming out is crushed down to about half the regular diameter.
You would have to cut the Stock piping right at the can.
Not sure why you would want to modify a worn out and rusting resonator. Get an aftermarket replacement with the size piping you want already built in.

For the cost of customizing the OEM resonator, you might as well have a new aftermarket one done with the rest of your exhaust. I'm sure you can find one the same size or bigger even, with less restrictive flow.

 

I'm assuming the reason he wants to do this is to keep the noise as low as possible and figured the OEM resonator works well in the noise department, and wanted to also see if doing so would negate performance gains from an exhaust.
