Rpm raves up them drop back to normal

have a 96 maxima and all of a sudden my rpm rav up to 4000 and drop back down to 2000 and stays normal after that wheneva i stop and go to pull of i dont have a check engine light on so what can it b what can b done? Untouchablecurvygirl@gmail.com
