Oem Belt Substitutes
Oem Belt Substitutes
Does anyone know who the oem belt supplier for Nissan is?
Or who has bought non-oem belts that they are sure are excellent quality from a parts store or belt supplier.
I need to replace both belts on my 2003 GLE, but the dealership prices are high.
I'd like to buy them locally if I can.
Thanks

This forum post reply says that the Gates belts squeals no matter what:

The exact same thing happened to me!!!!
The problem is that the garage used a "Gates" belt instead of the actual Nissan belt. The Nissan belt has "felt" on the backside that grabs the pulleys much better than the harder rubber compound of the Gates belt.
You can crank it tighter all you want, and it still squeals when you start it up.
After tightening it, we gave up 3 weeks later and replaced it with Nissan belts.
thanks

oem is you're best option..dealer prices are obviously high, but they're other online alternatives that sell oem products for a fraction of what the dealer would charge.

Gates work fine. I drive (drove now lol) the **** out of mine and never a pip.
I had to drive through deep water at WOT to get the slightest squeal.
People need to learn how to tighten belts.
PS belt is a cheapie from advanced and no trouble with it either.

How long do they last; Weird problem for me
I did look at Courtesy. The belts would come to about $40 plus shipping, which is probably at least 7-8 bucks, bringing it to 48. The local dealer wants $58 for both at list. So 10 bucks to wait to get the belts isn't a big bargain.
As far as the autozone belts, I'm sure they don't squeal, but the question is how long do they last? If they wear out early then they are no bargain.
I have some weird thing going on. My car has 66k miles on it and suddenly two days ago I started getting this squeak sound only when well warmed up and mostly when doing high lock turns of more than one turn of the steering wheel left or right. I haven't had time to pull off the cover under the driver's front wheel to look at the belt.
It is very weird. Fluid levels are normal. I still have my snow tires on, and have to swap to summer tires as soon as I can.

I say go with the OEMs even if they are a few bucks more. Afterall, you generally only need to replace them every 60K-70K (some people, namely those who don't care for cars like we do, go longer w/o issues), so it's a fair investment for that much driving.
The OEMs are thicker, and designed well to resist breakage b/c when the belts slip, the cords tighten to maintain tension. On our cars, I've noticed the alternator/AC belt tends to crack and wear faster because there are more tension points on it, and it's in the vicinity of the thermostat, which radiates hot air.
So I recommend OEM still, but if you insist on aftmarket, go with Gates. They are a good brand, and they make a lot of OEM belts (i.e. they make timing belts for Hondas). Or, just be really nice, and straight-up ask the parts guy if you can get a discount if you buy multiple items with the belts (pick up an air filter, 2 oil filters for future use, or 4L of ATF for a drain and fill, etc).
