i dont have much knowledge about it but i do know my friend wanted them to use a oem piece from the dealer but the mechanic was too cheap to pay 800 dollars for it so they bought a aftermarket one for 300 so i would guess any can be used as long as it fits

the dealer... if you know how key cylinders work you can pretty much figure out that metal pates inside are stuck... replacing the cylinder is simple nothing too much to it... door handle needs to come out ad from that point its just plug and play...

lol i meant the locking part as long as it fits into the door lol not that any key can fit lol :P so i guess he would have one key for doors and 1 key for ignition?

any lock cylinder for our cars, and many other cars from that generation, will fit a majority of keys in them and theyll work. if you dont want ghost keys to be an issue, shave all the lock cylinders and just use your keyless entry. this of course creates a whole other list of problems that can occur.

thats good idea ggenius but like you said the other issues that can happen from this like the battery dying lol anyways if someone wants to steal your car they dont care if you have crazy aftermarket alarm, no lock cylinders they can easily tow it or break window rather than fooling around with picking locks.

Take the car to a locksmith that works on cars and have them fix it. Maybe only the tumblers have to be replaced, maybe the key cylinder needs to be replaced. But when the thing is fixed, only the correct key will work. To buy a new key cylinder with a key that is different from the ignition just doesn't make sense to me.

This! You'll then have to keep up with 2 keys instead of one.
