Can I pass insepction without a muffler?

I am having a very hard time bringing myself to putting on a fart can sized muffler. I saw an S5 with just pure exhaust pipes, it was straight piped. Obviously my car is not an S5 but I have a preference for a nicer appearance as opposed to strapping on a canon to the back. I don't understand why I would not pass considering my cat is still on.

Oh, and I live in PA.

People straight pipe all the time. I'm not sure how it messes with emissions. No need to be a ****

Decibels are an emission too. If it too much noise pollution it might cause a fail. Oregon doesn't do inspections so this is purely conjecture.

if its a visual and tailpipe-sniffer inspection, you'll fail. If its an OBDII plug-in inspection, like NY, you'll pass as long as you have no check engine lights.

not sure where youre from, but here in TX I was an inspector for a few years... Mufflers arent required, but a cat is. Also, the location of where it dumps is part of the inspection. Must be behind the back seat. Noise is not a failable aspect of an inspection. It's a ticketable offense but thats it. Since your a 97-99 model, you dont have to worry about the sniffer so that isnt going to get you. Like they said up there, just make sure you dont have a cel and your good.

but, if you want a good sounding exhaust, dont straight pipe it. Its gonna be loud and raspy. Buy yourself a nice resonator and magnaflow oval muffler. looks oem-ish and sounds good...

LOL back in the day I vowed to get a Greddy system when the exhaust went bad. Well, when the Max was 7 y.o. I added a BMW 335i coupe to my household, so doing something to the exhaust became a non-interest given the other car has 4 cats and is a true dual setup with a h-pipe. Thing is it was almost 11 y.o. before the original Nissan exhaust failed, so I would wonder what happened to the muffler? Common sense says you need it for inspection purposes. What possible benefit is there to the VQ to have no muffler?

Man, that is high risk and will not waste my money the first time around. I would put it on just o make sure you don't pay for inspection twice.

This may be a radical concept, but why doesn't the op go to an inspection station and ask them? There is a pretty good chance that they would know the answer.

If PA has an actual inspection, then yes everything must be legal. Good tires, good brakes, muffler, etcetera.

What you really need to is check on your local DMV website, or talk with a local inspector. They will know for sure. In NC you have to have a muffler of some kind attached to the vehicle.
