Best way to remove bubbling window tint film?
Best way to remove bubbling window tint film?
I am buying a 1992 Maxima SE 5SP (56,000 original miles!!!) and it has that crappy film tint on the 2 back door windows and the rear window. Can I simply get my trusty razor blade out and scrape it off or is it more complicated? Any recommendations? Thanks.
BTW, the car is gold with a spoiler. All original. Leather, Bose, moonroof, etc. Absolutely perfect inside and out. I have always wanted a 92-94 SE and now I finally have an excellent example.

side windows...just take a sharp razor blade/scraper and go to town. get a >>white<< (important) scouring pad. the green ones scratch..the white ones are teflon and won't scratch the glass...use that to scrub the glass to remove left over glue.
(if you have defroster lines)
the rear window u have to spray on ammonia/water mix and park the car in the hot sun...spray the glass and put a black garbage bag behind it. give it a few hours and start peeling the old tint off. get a PLASTIC razor blade/scraper and CAREFULLY remove the old glue.
go check out www.tintdude.com for more info/details.
good luck...take your time.

What dan said...
also.. the glue will come off very easily with a rag soaked in windws or something similar..
once you get the tint off the side windows, scrape it one more time with the razor blade to remove the glue. then go over it with windex. it's about the quickest and cleanest method I've found..
for the back window, you can't do that.. follow dan's suggestion on the teflon scouring pad on the rear window.

Well.... to get off the tint first, we use a steamer at work.
Just put hot steam against the tint and pull carefully, if you're
lucky it'll come off in 1 piece... then get some window clean
and a scouring pad and scrape scrape scrape... 3rd gens aren't fun

I just did this twice, once on a 4th gen and this summer on my car. I had that cool purple tint
, and that had to go. You can use a razor blade on the side windows but that takes way to long. And DONT use it on the back window. My dad used to do autobody work, and said that when you scrape the tint off you also scrape the defroster lines off. And when you use the ammonia, or similar stuff you take the risk of the defroster lines coming unglued and not working like they used to. I had a high power heat lamp that I used. Have one person hold the heat lamp on the outside while another person slowly peals it off. Slowly is the key because if it is done right there will not be any glue left on your windows. I would do the side windows first so you can get pratice. I know you can rent the heat lamps too. Just my $0.02.

I got a tint removal kit from the local pepboys store. I think they may stack in behind the counter, you have to ask for it if you don't see it on the shelf. But, it's a solution you can dissolve with water then spray onto the film. I don't know exactly how it works, but it makes it a whole lot easier to peel off. The kit also comes with a this plastic thing that holds a razor blade, it's easier to just scrape the glue right off, since it will be nice and soft already. I removed tint film including the glue off both back windows, including the little triangluar ones in about 1 hour. I'd test it out, it was cheap too.
