A/T Check message

I must apologize that my car is NOT a Maxima but an 03 I35 but i got ZERO help on our board...my question is (if its even the same on a Maxima, i assume it is)

Sometimes...not always...when i start the car the "Check A/T" message flashes maybe 5-10 times and goes away and does not return during a drive cycle...other times on start up the message does not flash at all. Any ideas why it does it sometimes and not others? I dont notice in difference in driveability either way

What would that message mean if it stayed on all the time out of curiousity? Is it like a check engine light but just for the trans? (ive never seen that, trans faults always went to check engine light as far as i knew in other cars)

Thanks soooo much
