Hey everyone was just wondering if you guys may know what my issue may be. So i got a 98 Maxima Se and sometimes 3 out of 10 times when i start the car the temp gauge goes directly to H and my gas gauge goes all the way to full and my mileage goes to 999999.. I shut the car off and restart the car and everything is back to normal. Any help would be appreciated!

 

It could be the wire harness connections on the cluster. There are 3 of them. Some people have had problems and by disconnecting and re-connecting the cables, they have fixed the problem.

There is a self diagnostic built into the cluster that you could run. It's in the FSM. I would suggest you read the entire section about the cluster before you do the self diagnostic. I would also suggest that you unplug/re-plug the wire harnesses before doing the self diagnostic.

The instrument cluster is in section EL of the FSM. In the 1999 FSM, the description starts on page 69 and the diagnostic procedure starts on page 73.

Quite frankly, I don't think running the diagnostic will accomplish much. If the cable thing doesn't fix the problem, you probably need to replace the cluster.

 

Hey dennis i am running into a problem were the gauges work and then not work hitting a bump in the road ...got be the connection behind the dash because i can tap the top of the dash and make the gauges go out ....then it starts to work as normal...should use contact cleaner or dielitic grease for the connections? any suggestions thanks how to approach it .....

 

I used 600 grit sandpaper on the printed circuit board contacts. Also some contact cleaner. This removed the oxidation.

You might as well consider replacing the light bulbs while you
are in there anyway. Also tighten the screws which attach the speedo to the cluster. This might avoid spedo problems in the future.

Just a update...
Had the cluster out and the contact were the Speedo goes were oxidized..took some scotch brite and clean them up and used some alcohol on a q tip....also some ground screw were lose tighten them up...runs great now..thanks for everyone's tips

well its a no go worked for a day and back to square one ....i can tapon the dash it would work then go out just crazy....tighten all ground screws on the back of the board still having problems ...i guess a boneyard visit...

 

I recently had same problem in my 96 save your self some time and buy a new film board on back of the cluster piece from the dealer it only cost 40$.

 

well went to the boneyard and found one in 99 se ...installed and works great also only 8 thousand more on it not bad for 15$ anyway the other one works but when you tap at the top it goes just weird and also tighten all the ground screws still does it..so is there a way to check the spedo and take it out? anybody got a back picture of the board? just checkin to make sure all ground screws are on it .thanks again ..

 

This is your problem

 

Over time, the soldered contacts near the screws which mount the Speedo, teach, etc tend to breakup. the solution is to resolder the contacts. you could just melt the existing solder which is already there, or add just a wee bit more.

Be sure to use only rosin core solder. it is meant for electrical work.

a similar acid core solder would make the problem worse.

I had a Speedo problem. resoldering worked for me.

 

Ok we're is located in speedo itself? Or is it under the printed cicrict board

 

On the speedo. On either side of the mounting screws. There are solder joints. It appears that they crack because the speedo jiggles a bit while on bumpy roads. Eventually the solder cracks. Re soldering those places often fixes the problem
