Starting without pushing the clutch

Is there a way to disable the clutch pedal being pushed to start the car? I've looked thru some of these threads but couldn't find anything on how to do it.

Would have had more luck probably if had done an entire forum search instead of 5th gen specific. You could install a push button start. Good place to install it would be in place of your cigarette lighter/power port.

Basically you're just bypassing the ignition signal to the starter.

Having said all that, it is REALLY NOT a good idea to move the car using the starter. Can damage flywheel and/or starter.

There are 2 different ways you can disable the clutch pedal safety feature.

1 - Remove the clutch interlock relay located in the box in front of the battery. Insert a jumper wire into the socket between pins 3 and 5. Use at least 16 gauge wire for the jumper.

2 - Unplug the wire harness connector from the switch that is on the clutch pedal. Insert a jumper wire into the wire harness connector.

Personally, I wouldn't do this. But if you do, i would prefer the first way. The second method as electrical current constantly flowing through the wire.

I disabled mine in 2 minutes. When you push the clutch in it presses up against a buttoned relay. I'm not sure what to call it but its essentially the same idea of older cars that had the button on doors to signal if it fully closed or not. I took a standard zip tie and just tightened it until the button is fully depressed. If you look at the clutch you will understand what I mean. I never push the clutch to start the car. However I am very mindful of it. Meaning when I start the car I double check its not in gear. As Chris said above its bad to move the car using the starter. Just have to be aware is all. Oh this is on a 2000 5speed by the way.

I drove a 95 s10 for almost 9 yrs and i'm so used to not having to push in the clutch to start it. Never really had a problem with forgetting it was in gear. On this car it seems i have to really push the pedal far, all the way to the floor, to get it to ingage. Which other than not being able to hear the engine run, it's my only grip. Guess it's just a personal preference for me? I'm looking into a nice exhaust to help the the quiet engine too.

I love the fact that is some vehicles you don't need to push the clutch in to start it. At work I drive a Kenworth T660 and you don't need to push the clutch to start it. get in any other non Kenny though and it just seems like a PITA to push in the clutch lmao. You DO get used to it so I know what you mean. If your not an idiot I don't think anyone who hops into a stick shift just leaves it in gear to start it anyways, I always make sure its in Neutral Whatever the vehicle is.

I wired up a relay so it will start in neutral in my 98. There is a reverse/neutral switch on the trans thats wired to the ecu. Find the pin at the ecu, pretty sure it supply's ground. Then wire up a relay and new failsafe on/off switch to the clutch switch wire(s) that completes the circuit. Heck you may not even need a relay, it's been many years since I did this.

That's a pretty good idea. You just need to re-wire the energizing coil of the clutch interlock relay to the neutral switch instead of the clutch pedal switch.

People might want to disable it because once you drive a vehicle that you don't have to push the clutch to start it, There is no other way!! Everybody who drives a stick what's the first thing you do when you first get into the car before starting it??? Wiggle it and make sure its in neutral right???

Well, not if you park it in gear. Then you just push in the clutch!

Now I see your point... BUT at the same time I drive a rig so the ONLY time I use the clutch is frist and reverse and when stopped while running. Even though you might park it in gear it ALWAYS comes out and you never risk damage as the engine isn't running. Plus driving a rig I never park it in gear anyways because they have a totally different parking brake system. NO air means the parking brake is on so there isn't a chance of the vehicle moving no matter what.

As with any manual vehicle, If I really need to start the car without the clutch I just remove my left shoe and slide my big toe up behind the clutch pedal and push in the switch.

Do you have asian feet?

I've never tried it, but I imagine it wouldn't end well with big feet haha

I'd be afraid my toe would get stuck and I'd have to call 9-1-1 for a crash truck and for the Jaws of Life to cut me out. Reminds me of when the Nutty Professor was driving the Viper and turned back into Herman, but just the foot part.

I have driven many cars that did not require the need for fully pressing the clutch in to start. As stated before Im used to getting in and wiggling the stick in neutral. But to me pushing the clutch is no BIG deal at all. Not like you have to give a DNA, retna scan and sperm sample before you start the car.

This mod really only makes sense to me if you are looking to install a remote start. Even then......

But, to each their own. I'd just ask for whomever does this, just remove it for the person you eventually sell your car to.
