Best tint percentage for maxima
Best tint percentage for maxima
I recently purchased a 2014 black Maxima Sv. I'm want to tint the windows and I really can't decide what % would look best. I'm thinking somewhere between 30%-20% but I'm open to all suggestions and opinions (pics would help a lot). I don't want anything too dark but I also want the tint to be noticeable in the daytime. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!
Ya, without a doubt. I had 35% on my old car and it was very light, 70% is basically no tint whatsoever. I'm just trying to figure out what most people put on their Maxima's... Hopefully give me some ideas. I think I'm going to go with either 25% or 20%.
I live in MA and the legal limit here is 35% total. They actually take readings when you get your annual inspection so there's really no way around having to be legal.
My question is, does anyone know what amount of tint is built into the glass from the factory? Here they take the total, glass plus aftermarket tint so if you put 35% on you'll probably be illegal. That means I have to jump up to 45% or so to be safe. 40% seems hard to come by and might still put me right on the legal line. One % or ten! they fail for either.

I'm in CA where you can't tint the front drivers and passenger windows. That being said, I went 35% all around and think it looks great. It is noticeably dark up front, but so far I have not had a second look from Johnny Law as of yet. I have a 2012 SV sport in pearl white.

Anyway, my point is that I haven't had my ***** busted because I only went 35% and if I do get my chops busted then I know it's only Officer Hardo being a tool because he has nothing better to do.
Personally, I'd love to do 20% or 5% myself but I feel that I'd just be asking for it if I were to go that dark, being in a state with no allowance for aftermarket tint.
Another thing, too, is that I heard you can get some sort of "special allowance" card kind of thing from your eye doctor which is a caveat to the law and you'd be fine with even a really dark tint. I haven't done it myself, but I have heard that.

My tint is at 35%. Factory glass is about 10%. So the dude who tinted my windows put 45% to make it 35% total.
At the inspection shop it was registering 33-32%. They said it was ok.
Just curious, what did you fail for?
I've got a couple pics I'll try to find.
Failed for cat-back being too loud.
I'm in nyc, and it all depends on where you are in ny. I get stopped if I'm in brooklyn, but any where else in nyc is fine. As long as you don't speed down the street with loud music. Anyone should be fine and won't attract any cops. I have 20 percent all around with no problems, but about to change it to 5 percent when I move to virginia.
You could go into a vision doctor and say you get mind grains then you can get limo or 5% or what i got was 18% which is easier to see at night but it is still hard to see in some parking garages.

This....Va doesn't play at all.
Same goes for all my buddy's growing up. I think you'll be OK and legal here is 35%, which is what comes on SUVs and some cars from the factory. between 20 and 35% you can barley tell. You'll be just fine Im sure.
I don't think there is a "best". I think it's all preference, what you like and depending on if you want to stay within the legal limits.
I'm in illinois. We aren't supposed to have lower than 35%. On all my vehicles since I got my license, 8 years ago when I was 16, I have had 5% all around minus the windshield on all of my vehicles. I have got one ticket in that time. I paid my $120 fine and that was it. It really keeps the heat out, don't need sunglasses unless driving into the sun, and of course I think it looks cool.

I'm moving to virginia beach area. Couple of friends lives in VA, and doesn't have any problems with the tints. No matter what percentage it is. Thanks for the heads up though.
Tints
I haven't been hassled yet for tint. It looks pretty good, really dark at night. Black leather does enhance it. I went 35% all around (45% aftermarket + 10% factory). I wanted it to be symmetrical and legal.

Anywhere in the 30-38% VLT range is the best IMO. It's still a classy look but offers a significant reduction in heat (depending on film quality and type, obviously) and glare while providing a fair amount of privacy. Further, depending on your state laws...anything darker quickly increases your odds of getting a citation. Back in my LE days I wouldn't cite anyone just below our legal limit (32%VLT) unless they were a total *****, but most 20% and below vehicles I'd write them up. Check out the other window tint thread that's currently being discussed.
BRING ON THE TX HEAT!
Tint Advice
I have 20% on my silver max and it looks great. The tint law is nothing but a means for an officer to pull you over in hopes of finding something else. Rarely, will an officer pull you over for tints ONLY if he doesn't think your vehicle looks suspect unless your front windshield is tinted (which is dangerous)! As someone previously mentioned, you can in some if not all states get a prescription from your doctor for tinted windows. It must be in your vehicle at the time of the traffic stop and I believe it has to be updated every so often. Lastly, as a tip for dealing with officers on traffic stops when you have tints. Make the officer feel at ease by turning on your cabin lights and putting all of your windows down especially at night. Cars with dark tints present a greater risk to officers as we cannot see inside the vehicle on approach. If youre cool about it usually he or she will cut you a break unless of course you have something else going on.
I forgot to mention that in some states your car can also be impounded and rendered unsafe to drive if the tints are too dark. Please take that into consideration when getting your tints. If you're rolling around with 5% tints and you're a jerk when you get pulled over, be prepared to have bus fare.
In NC the most we can have is 35%. On my max he put 40% (went with FormulaOne ceramic) - which makes it around 34% on the meter. Since I have tan interior it does appear lighter and also a little brown (which I don't particularly like).
We also just and 40% of the same tint put on our new QX and it appears black as opposed to brown and I like it a lot better (it has black interior).
I have never been hassled due to my tint, but I have a friend and he used to get hassled all the time for having tint...guess it depends on where you live.

I am now a 3M ColorStable and 3M Crystalline believer. I got 35% on the sides (combined with factory gives about 29-30%) and 5% on the back for the baby. On the front windshield I went with the 3M Crystalline 90%, so it is invisible literally, but blocks out 92% of IR heat. I honestly thought 35% was going to be too light. I was wrong. 35% is the perfect tint. I have the sportiest and "CLASSIEST" looking Maxima you have ever seen anywhere. Everywhere I go, people always compliment the car, and not just yound people. EVERYBODY YOUNG AND OLD, doctor's, lawyers, EVERYBODY! Sad thing is all I did was tint the windows and add the Philips Daylight Guide daytime running lights. I haven't even got around to putting halo's in yet! I need to take a picture of this beast for you guys to see what I'm talking about!
