Baking My Headlights! (Pics of Progress)

Guys I swear this is scary at the thought but once you get into the process you realize that it isn't THAT bad!

This is just some pics of the baking process. I found that 200 degrees for 14 minutes was ideal.

As you can see I have the 2011 Sport...hence the already charcoal housing (larger part). I will be leaving this the same and painting the chrome part matte black after priming.

Thanks brother! Waiting on the housings to fully dry now..painted them matte black and left the larger portion of the housing the stock charcoal grey as it comes on the 2011 Sport. Will put pics up shortly of the housings.

The first pic is a before of the smaller portion of the housing and the second pic is an after. I also tinted the side markers as I waited.

Definitely, that's what I'm doing now. Smoking the chrome trim on the Maxi tomorrow to help with the waiting, two birds with one stone!

Housings back on although they are still separated to allow longer to dry/air out. One more time I have the 2011 Sport so by default the larger part of my housing is a gloss charcoal...I painted the smaller portion (surrounding the actual light) matte black and threw one coat of tint on the side markers.

Question for those who may know...how do the silica packets hold up when baking to re-seal? I have them held in my duct tape so just wanted to make sure they would survive the baking in this case.

Cool

Here we go guys! I'm pretty with how they turned out...just to recap I left the larger part of the housings the 2011 Sport Black Chrome and hit the smaller portion with matte black!

Thanks brother! I'm liking how leaving the black chrome portion the way it was gave it some extra pop with the matte portions added!

ebay has premade ones now....but still no LED drl's. LED drl for the maxima a35 would be the game changer.

I saw, for $400! Once you get past the fear of baking I feel that $5 and a weekend is well worth it...and a cool learning experience.

Did you consider LED drl for this project? And how much harder would it be?

the ebay/aftermarket replicas of our headlights do not seal properly. lot of people are popping up with condensation problems in custom headlights that are being made, and all of them have these replicas. you get what you pay for guys. this is why I only use OEM headlights for my customers, or mod their set.

I did but opted out. I wanted to keep it subtle for this project, but it does look great for those who do have it!

In the case of those lights you may not even get what you pay for....$400?? I'm with you on the OEM thought though, even when I had my Mustang years ago I only added OEM parts etc or modified the ones already there.

Also I'm not sure but my guess would be not too much harder depending on what exactly you were doing. A strip lining the front of it for example is just a strip from VLeds etc and possibly some wiring?

That looks so nice! Seriously! I've been contemplating doing this to my new Max for a while but I'm really scared. I did a retrofit swap for the HID lights on my 05 Maxima but this one is just much more delicate to me and I can't mess it up. I think I might procrastinate until the summer. That way I can do the LED DRL's as well at the same time. Once again, that looks excellent!

Really impressive looking. But above all you get to tell people you baked your headlights in the oven - it just doesn't get much better!

Thanks brother! It's really not as scary as it seems....especially the first time you crack them open, you'll be looking for another reason to bake them! I'm actually getting ready to crack mine back open to install Halo rings (70mm on the lows and 90mm on the highs) and repaint the housings crimson black to match my body color. Go for it!

I went ahead and did mine. The hardest part about the whole thing is just using some arm meat to get them open. Oh and taking the bumper off requires some cohones but once you do it, you realize it isn't that bad. One thing I recommend is to wet sand off all the chrome before priming and use plastic primer.
