Transmission oil change

I went to buy a transmission filter for my '96 SE auto and the guy told me that they didn't sell them because it required disassembly of the transmission?! I then went home to look in my Haynes manual and it shows a picture of the trans with the pan off and the filter is right there just like other cars. Has anyone had this problem and if so where did you buy your filter? This store was AutoZone. Thanks

Jeff

You don't need to change the filter. It's only a mesh type to catch bigger objects. And if your catching $hit in there chances are your tansmission is falling apart.
Your drain plug is magnetic and should pick up any metal particals in the transmission oil. Wipe it off when you change the fluid and your all set.

There are also 2 magnets attached to the pan itself you can clean off.

The drain plug on my 99 auto was NOT magnetic.......a cost cutting maneuver done by Nissan, although I'm not sure when.

BTW, this answers most questions under the "Automatic Transmission Cooler Install" thread:

I'm torn as to whether I need a transmission flush or not.

My 95 SE has 81k miles, but the transmission fluid is very clean. Transmission shifts fine (except for the 1>2 jerk which has always been there).

THe guy at the shop says it's not necessary to change it. The fluid is so clean, it looks like it's out of the bottle. I just got the car 6 months ago, so I don't know when it was changed.

Should I spend the $60 and do a flush & fill? OR should I just use the money for my GC/Koni fund?

You could do it yourself if you wanted for much less. Then you could still have plenty left over for your fund and not need to change the tranny fluid maybe ever again.

but if I do it myself, it'll be a drain & fill. If my oil appears clean, a drain & fill won't do much, would it?

Flush & fill might do a better job to clean out the transmission, yes?

Thanks for the info. I did go to wrenchhead.com to search for a filter and it came up with one for $11 bucks. I'm assuming it is the screen that was mentioned earlier in this post. For such a low price would it not be good insurance to change it? How hard is it to change?
