Had a Question about my 97 SE 5 speed

Recently, i have been having a problem with my car. I have a 97 SE 5 speed. My car starts but when I start driving sometimes, or if I am alreday driving and come to a full stop, the car will just automatically shut off and I have to start the car again. It's been happening a few times, not alot, and it just started doin it for maybe a few days. Anybody got any clue on what it could be?

hey now no dissin the red/clears there are WAYYYY to many maxima's to even consider the clear reds to be common. As for your car i hope it gets fixed, is it a problem with your clutch? when you come to a complete stop do you put the car in neutral?

2 things;

Clean your Throttle Body

Repace your feul filter

My car ocaaisionally died on me once or twice. I would engage 1st gear at really low rpms, like 400-500 rpm, normally, it would engage smoothly, but sometimes, it died. I thought that was odd. Anyway, I've cleaned my TB and my low idle now is MUCH strnger and smoother, so I'm not likely to stall out as I did before.

i dont know if its the clutch cuz the dealer said it was fine, but recently when i push down the clutch its harder to push down and it makes a weird noise. if the clutch needs to be replaced, which i think soon, i will get a stage 1 clutch. and when i come to a stop, ya i do put it in neutral and thats when the problem occurs, that and and when i put it in first at low rpms...

Don't go to the dealer! They'll charge something like $150 for those 2 jobs that you can do yourself! The TB cleaning takes like 40 minutes. Really easy. Lots of instructions here at Maxima.org and others. For example here;

http://www.motorvate.ca

The guy who runs that site is an org member, too, MaxVQ I beleive.

Admittedly, the Feul filter job can be a bit tough, especially if you have ABS

No ABS here but the fuel filter took me a whole 10 minutes to change.

Yeah, most guys find it easy. I don't know, I guess I don't like working in small spaces. Usually get frustrated and break something. And the ABS lines are right in the way!

Hehe, I get frustrated pretty easily too! So I understand EXACTLY what you mean! My question is, why would Nisaan not make ABS standard on the Maxima back in 95 when the 4th gen came out? Even something like a Chevy Lumina had it standard in like 92! And especialy a friggin SE?! Oh well, enough of my ranting and raving.

I don't know about the Lumina, but I rented a Cavalier once. It boasted ABS. Rolling along I give it a test and floor the brakes. That was the crappiest ABS I had ever experienced! It was like Brake . . . .let go . .brake. . . let go. I could manually brake faster than that crap!

GM may have made ABS standard on all its vehicles, but they seem to have gone for the lowest common denominator. At least with the Maxima, the ABS is quite sophistacated, and fast. So it must have been too costly in '95 to make it standard.

I am doing the tb cleaning this sat and want to change the fuel filter and maybe do a KN panel for now. I tried the search and could not find the instructions to do the fuel filter. How to do it? Thanks and anyone got a KN (stock for now) cheap for sale? I can clean/oil it myself. Thanks all. Peace: e3 - spamman

Here's Steve Cutchen's MaxFAQ's site with instructions for the feul filter;

(By the way, you can put in an over-size 300ZX filter. I did It doesn't increase performance, just makes the filter last longer, like 60K miles instead of 30K miles)

The newer GM ABS is great! And by the way, Nissan didn't make it standard until 2000. Explain that one to me. I just think that such a car saving device should be standard, and should have been since it's inception. That's all.

some people in 95-99 would rather pay less and not get ABS
i had it on my 95 and i don't on my 97, doesn't bother me cause i manually break fast anyways.

Ya, I can modulate the pedal pretty quick too But try doing ot on a pure sheet of ice known as I-25 after a heavy snow when the traffic suddenly STOPS and you'll see why I wish I had it.

ABS is useless on ice. It'll just be modulating your brakes like crazy for nothing because the tires have no grip at all

True to a point. It still helps you stop quicker. At least in my experiance it does. And regardless of how fast you can modulate the brake pedal, the newest ABS can do it MUCH faster. Just my .02 cents

Mine was doing that too. Of course, I had a DEAD battery, so there was no backup power reserves. When I got to my destination, I put it to the test: I quickly rolled all windows down and then up and down and up, and that was enough to kill the car. Pretty funny how weak it was (using the turn signal would drop the RPMs since they directly drained the engine instead of the battery).

I don't need to replace it, do I? I dropped in a new battery and it seems to work fine.

A new battery will work for a couple of days to a couple of weeks on a weak alternator because it is getting SOME charge from a WEAK alternator. So if it quickly dies again, then yes, you do need to replace your alternator.

Thanks - I'm selling the car to CarMax, so would they note a weak alternator? Acutally, my car has had ~100 miles in the last ten months, so that's probably the problem.

It really depends on how weak it is. If the battery dies while they're checking it out then ya, they'd notice. You ought to fix it first man. Not really worth screwing people. Just my .02 though.

That caertainly would cause a weak and totally dead battery. You can have the whole system checked for free by most local auto supply store, ie checker, kragen, etc..... I would recommend that you do that and take it form there.

Good luck selling the car
