JBL GTO's fit in a 4th gen?

Has anyone installed either the 625's or 635's in a 4th gen? If so, any fitment problems?

I talked to Crutchfield and they said they wouldn't fit in either the front door or the rear deck because of tweeter protrusion, but I thought I saw a post before about someone having installed them.

That might be a problem, I think the grill on the door sits far enough away to clean the tweeter. On the rear deck just replace the factory grills and it should be good. Let me do a little searching and I'll let you know.

Thanks for checking! Hey, you work for Infinity/JBL. (No longer a question, I checked your profile ) I've had great experiences with other JBL products (mostly pro sound), and these looked pretty good on paper, plus they can be had for $50~60 on the net.

Yes, I work for the mobile division, glad to here you like JBL, the pro stuff is sick, have you seen our new GTI? It's designed by the same people that design pro, its sweet stuff. The GTO's are a great speaker for the money, the swivle and piviotable tweeter is a great feature. They sound great, many dealers say they sound better then speakers that are almost twice their price. I have a set here but I didn't have any time to "fit" them in my door's, I'll try to do it tomorrow. The tweeter doesn't really stick out to far from the basket but I'd like to be perfectly sure. You could also try the power series, they are a little more money but they can be converted from a Coax to components just by purchasing a P-Kit for $70ish, I think the 6.5" (I have 6 pairs in my demo truck) sell for about $150ish.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question, I spoke to one of our product developers this morning. He and I both agreed that while it might not be a "drop in" install it will fit. When you remove the door pannels, the speaker mounts to a big black plastic ring which is a spacer. Try installing the speaker and see if the tweeter clears the grill if not, remove the speaker from the ring and grind the ring down a little bit to add a little extra room. You can do this yourself or any local shop can help you with the install. Cruthfield told you they might not fit to prevent a possible return, most people who buy from them don't want to have to modify things, just drop in and go. Hoep that helps, any other questions drop me a line.

You mean the piece that comes with the speakers to fit a 6.5" into a 6.75" opening, right? Also, would this also apply to the back speakers as well, or is it better to use the grills that come with the speakers? And is it pretty straightforward to change grills?

Thanks for the help. I'm psyched! I'd love to get these into my car.

The black plastic ring I was talking about is actualy in the car from the factory. When you remove the door pannel you'll see the factory speaker mounted in a plastic ring (sorry I don't have any pics right now, will later tho). That plastic ring is thick and can be ground down if extra clearance is needed. You should use the factory grills and not the ones that come with the speakers. The factory grill is part of the door pannel, it can be removed but its not a round shape, almost more like a tear drop so using the suppled grill will result in a mis-match shape, plus if you use the factory grill it cuts down on the theft issue, no one will be able to look in the car and see the aftermarket speakers. I might be taking more door pannels off in a few days to remove my Image Dynamics that I'm trying to sell. If I do this I'll take photos and send them to you so you can see what I'm talking about before you crack open your door pannel. Good luck and if you need any help give me a shout.

Thanks! That makes it a lot clearer for the fronts.

Sorry to keep throwing questions your way, but as for the grills, I was referring to the back speakers. (I want to put a set both in front and back.) Is it possible to use the stock grills on the rear deck (for just the reason you mentioned), or do I need to replace them? And what is involved with changing grills there?

Also I know the 625's are a 2-way with a pivoting tweeter, while the 635's are a 3-way without pivot. I was wondering if the 625's might actually sound better with the tweeters rotated to position in the front because of the speaker location? And which one would match better in the back?

No problem, I thought you ment the front speakers. I think the rear's might be ok. Honestly I don't remember, my rear deck has 2 12" GTI woofers in it I think the rear grills mount to the rear deck from the bottom and the speakers bolt directly to the metal rear deck. The tweeter might clear the O.E. grill, your gonna have to try that out. What you can do before hand is to measure the height of the JBL from the mounting lip to the top of the tweeter and then measure the O.E. grill. If not then try to mount the JBL grill to the rear deck like the O.E. and not to the speaker so it will look smoother, if you really want to keep the speakers hidden then remove the logo from the grill.
As for the which one sounds better, that's up to you. I like 2 ways better than 3 ways, for rear speakers you'd want them for fill more than anything else so I would go with the 625's and yes you can and I would piviot the tweeter to the front for a little better sound.

Thanks again, and again, and again...

Your setup is awesome. I was actually thinking this would be the ideal setup, with components in the front and just subs in the deck, while using virtually no trunk space. But it's a bit beyond what I'm willing and able to do right now. The rear deck subs are pretty involved, right? I would wager that winning NOPI takes quite an amount of work on all the pieces involved...

Thanks, its soon to be redone, I'm adding a 5th amp, a few lcd screens, rear speakers and a center channel for 5.1 As for trunk space, with all the amps I have no trunk, but its worth it. I actually won NOPI before I had this set up, had my PPI (now for sale)in there with my JL woofers. Attention to detail is important for any show car and it goes a long way with most judges.
