Doesn't shift down after reaching 5th gear
Hey guys,
I just wanted to see if anyone knew what was causing this. I'm taking it in the morning to get it checked and fixed for free but I would like to know what is actually causing this to happen.
I have an '06 Maxima that just got the transmission rebuilt about a week ago. Today I was taking it for a drive and all of a sudden the "Service Engine Soon" light came on and I noticed that my RPMs started to run a little high.
I then noticed that it was stuck in 5th gear. When I would come to a complete stop it would not shift down at all and even when I would get on the highway it would not shift up into 6th (is there a 6th? I have no idea :P). I was going 70 mph at 3,500RPM. The mechanic that I'm taking it to said it could be the speed sensor but he would figure it out.
Anyone here know what could be causing this to happen? Even if I put the car in park and then back to drive it stays in 5th. The only way I can get it back down to 1st is if I turn the car off and then back on.

Most likely one of camshaft sensors is bad, which is common issue on this car. It recommended that you replace both camshaft sensors even if only one went bad, since besides being stuck on 5th gear, engine could eventually completely cut off and it could become a safety issue. You don't want your engine stop on a highway! Since your car is at the mechanic already, I guess he already figured it all out by now by pulling the code. You should be up and running in no time, it is relatively easy fix. Good luck!
