My A/C works in my 96 GLE, except when it's been sitting in the sun in 95+ heat. I know the black leather seats don't help matters much. This thing has never had the A/C serviced in the almost 19 years its been in the family. About how much would I expect to pay to get it checked out and have a little refrigerant added? About 7 years ago I attempted a DIY on my Quest van--that was a disaster. I used one of those 134 cans with the gauge you see at Wally World. Ended up with a seized compressor and a $1200 estimate at the repair shop. Sold the van rather than pay for that repair.

 

My ac was out for a while and it was the worst since i also had black interior so i replaced the condeser because it had a leak. Also replaced drier because it had the leak open for a couple of months then took it to get evacuated and recharged for $85. They also leak tested it which most places will do when recharging. It works great now so im pretty sure a recharge will do the trick if u said ur cars ac still works. Hopefully u dont have a leak.

 

You can find a lot of places that will check the system for $30. Anything else, such as add refrigerant, is an a additional charge.

You can try checking the temperature is the air blowing out of the ducts. Get one of those instant reading cooking thermometers and put it in the center air duct. The air should be around 60º F.

 

If a reputable shop can do A/C diagnostics for little money, do it. It will save you money to deal with it now. I finally sorted out my A/C issues on my I30 recently to the tune of about $1,100CAD but it was worth it (needed new compressor).

the dealer would of charged maybe $500 for diagnose, $1100 for compressor, $200 for recharge, $50 for parts, $200 for more crap.

compressors aint cheap, but heck that new one will last you years.

 

Its 100 bucks to drain and refill system at Valvoline.

Valvoline is official and uses the proper machine

 

i hate jiffy lube, they're not horrible but have used the wrong oil and under filled the maxima 2 times. i only use them as a last resort, you can top off your ac with this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZChill-18oz-R-134a-Refrigerant-Oil-System-Safe-Leak-Sealer-Hose-With-Gauge-/400703966129?hash=item5d4bd14bb1&vxp=mtr comes with a built in gauge and anyone can do this in a few minutes.

My bad, its Valvoline. They are good. Or they were good the last time i went there to have my system properly serviced.

 

my max was re-charged after my accident 6 years ago, i had to have my condenser replaced and the high-pressure line as well. so the whole system was re-charged. i need a top off tho, not as cold as it used to be.
