P1320 with misfire that goes away

Hey all,

I recently picked up a 1999 Max GLE with 90k miles on it for a steal. However, its come to my attention that this car seems to have issues with coil packs, which may be the reason its throwing the 1320. What I don't understand is the intermittent miss that seems to come and go as it pleases, usually right after I crank it. Any help guys?

Usually P1320 means that the owner had incorrect ignition coil brand installed in them. This probably is why its still misfiring. Install Hitachi coils (which are OEM) and the code/misfire should go away.

^Not necessarily true.

Although the coilpack(s) could be bad, so could the injector(s) or even the FPR in this case.

Start with the good ol' unplug the coilpack trick on each cylinder and listen for a change in RPM. If no change, then you found the cylinder that's acting up.

Then swap coillpacks and see if the silence follows to that cylinder. If so, you found your coilpack. If not, then most likely the injector at the original cylinder is bad.

Start with this and report back.

Hey guys,

Gonna test that this weekend when I have a spare moment. My Max missed again tonight, right after I cranked it up to go to the grocery store. After I came out 5 min later, it wasn't missing anymore, and rode smooth. My OBD reader is now showing a miss on #6, the P0306 code, along with the P1320. Is this my culprit? Last time it missed and I changed a coil, it threw the P0304, and the #4 coil was screwed.

Way back when, my 99 was misfiring and set P1320, it never set another code to pinpoint the cylinder.. I ended up replacing all 6 coils with OEM, never had another problem, that was 120K miles ago...

Follow my advice above and report back.

If you have original coils on a 99, change them all if you value your sanity...

I agree, I had to change my coils back in June this year cause it was misfiring, I bought 6 brand new OEM hitachi and no problems at all after 3 months. It seems like all the original coils on these cars are starting to go and need replacing. I would just replace all and save yourself a headache, it did for me.

One of the coils started to go bad on my '96, but not frequently enough to trip the CEL. Not knowing which one, I replaced all six with the spare set I had from my '95 parts car. No problems since. I know I still have at least five good spares, I just don't know which is which.
