air pressure for stock tires

I have a 1993 maxima with stock tires and wheels. When i fill the tires there is a gauge on the handle of the air pump that has numbers 1,2,3,4... etc. I filled my tires untill the gauge read 4. My first question is what the heck are those numbers? Is that current tire pressure? Also, what should that gauge read? I'm not talking about the 32lbs on the pump itself.

The pump reads 32 lbs! and is adjustable which is normal. It's the gauge on the handle of the pump that i'm talking about. it has this pop up gauge that tells me what the pressure in the tire is. It has little printed numbers on the rod that pops out of the gauge. ...1,2.3.. etc.
