need a new rad, steel or standard?

well, i tried some epoxy on the radiator and it didn't hold 2 weeks. so, next thing is replacement and i thought of maybe doing a solid steel one instead of a standard. opinions matter, but i want something that's going to hold up and isn't super expensive. advantages, disadvantages to steel and what brands of rads on the interwebs are a decent part. thanks

If I had to buy one tomorrow for the GLE automatic, I think I would get an OSC from Rockauto.com for roughly $85.

You want to avoid any radiators with steel parts -- especially in an area where rust is likely.

I've seen several Honda owners loose their transmissions to the Strawberry Milkshake of Death (SMOD) where the radiator coolant mixes with transmission fluid due to steel washers on the transmission fluid coolant fittings.

OEM. I only use OEM radiator caps and thermostats.

i meant aluminum, not steel. and, i found the same osc rad on ebay cheaper and free shipping but with only a 30 warranty? if i go with a store brand like car quest i get a limited lifetime warranty? do i just get a advanced auto one and say screw it cause of the warranty?

I went with a direct replacement Koyo radiator. They aren't very expensive online. For stock applications, I would just go with a direct OEM replacement rather than anything "performance".

I put a Koyo radiator in my 94, 97 and 2000 Maximas and didn't have any problems with them.

I would suggest that you replace the rubber support grommets on the bottom and top of the radiator. You need 2 each.

top grommet - 21506-51E00 msrp $3.60 each
bottom grommet - 21507-1E400 msrp $12.55

Honestly, A good decent radiator will do fine. I bought not a cheap one but not an expensive radiator over a year ago, and no problems at all..

I bought a koyorad a few years ago. It was good qualty, and I am happy.

Sick the radistor is a critical part, I chose NOT to use the cheapest option.

I recommend you replace the hoses coming off the radiator and into the transmission.. Clamps too!

About 16inches should do you good..

I'd be very surprised if you truly got a lifetime warranty on a radiator. You should get a warranty card with your radiator. Post it up for all to see.

I scoured their website for the past 15 minutes. I even watched their youtube videos... They go on and on about how great their radiators are, make comparisons and show pictures between their radiator and the competitors, but no where does it state lifetime warranty on their website that I could find. If you find it, let us know.

I will add that Koyo has been great to me. Installed 4 years ago and paid less than $100.

got the new osc radiator and i'm not impressed. the new oem rad cap sits weird on it and the box was damaged so i'm probably going to send it back as there was damage to the rad as a result.

My choice would be Denso

A Denso radiator with an OEM cap, and spray some Krown on the radiator support!

no card, owner said that there would be a lifetime warranty from osc. here's the new oem rad cap that sits sideways. and damage to the "new" radiator.

The ATF hoses are labelled 'Transmission Oil Cooler'. I cannot recall the combined length of both the feeding and return hoses but they total to more than 16". I purchased 3 feet of that 5/16" hose along with SS hose clamps at Advance Auto.

question, i replaced the drivers side coolant line with an oem one 2 years ago, can i just use pressurized 5/16 hose instead of the molded oem one for the other one? clamps i got, i guess i play it by ear on those rubber feet on the bottom. also, one of the connectors that hold the fans to the rad broke. any way to fix/rig that up so it holds in place?

Are you referring to the upper and lower coolant hoses connected from RAD to engine block or the transmission cooler hoses connected from the RAD to the AT? If it's the transmission cooler hoses then you can buy them at almost any auto store that carries them. As stated earlier I got 3' of the 5/16" hose at advanceauto. You don't need OEM hoses for those. They're not double braided like the fuel injection hoses so they bend easily onto their plastic mount clips.

Nice job B!

I just ordered one to keep in the workshop. I think I paid $30 something a few weeks ago to replace the one on the 98. I do keep spares but they aren't too flexible.
