Snapping/Popping sound from clutch pedal

My '90 SE 5sp with just under 200K miles has developed a sort of snapping or popping sound in the clutch pedal. The mechanic says it's a spring on which a covering (plastic? rubber?) has worn off, allowing a metal part to rub against the metal spring. He said he'd check into whether he can get just the spring, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Have you seen this problem? What were you able to do about it?

I recently bled the system, swapped slave cylinders and also fiddled with the clutch pedal linkage, before eventually replacing what turned out to be a broken clutch. I'm not sure what made most of the difference, but I have absolutely no creaking or squeaking noise in my clutch pedal anymore. Grease up the pedal linkage, and see if that helps. Some people have reported a grommet or washer that wears out as well.
