I don't think KBB understands how the trim levels work on these cars.



I accept that my Maxima is no longer worth anything to most people. Therefore I have no inclination to sell it. So if I'm going to keep it, I might as well keep improving it. I am planning to buy coilovers for it and looked up the book value as a joke when I saw this question. Funnier still is that KBB gave me a trade in value of $34 - $369 and a private party value of $433 - $1,430. Thirty-four dollars. Really? Like why even have that.

KBB lists the trim levels incorrectly sometimes. We all know the GXE is the lowest. It bugs me as I am currently shopping for a car. I may not know exactly what to look up. Many sellers these days are lazy and won't post enough to determine what trim or option packages it may have.

 

it's worth what someone who understands our cars is willing to pay for it. kbb is a huge joke and even the dealers i've talked to say it's the lowest possible trade in or pp sale that you could get. as violater said, " f u c k kbb"

 

How can any car in "excellent condition" be worth less than $1500. List your car for what you want for it make your claim as to why it's worth it and don't bother with people trying to pay "book price" for a car that's worth more. When I bought my first car I remember test driving cars listed for more than what these are booked at and those cars were all junk

 

Yeah KBB is a joke, alot of people price cars based off on there. Imagine if KBB didn't exist.

NADA is pretty silly too. They don't list many options or overall condition. They give a handful of values, trade in and retail. Then private parties try to use that retail number to sell their own vehicle.

Either way they are OK tools when researching vehicles.

I'm not concerned about the resale value. I was going to make a joke about putting $1,000 coilovers on my car that isn't even worth that much.

/\ This is what irritated me. That the website that supposedly provides information about vehicles doesn't even understand what it is categorizing.

 

My car has been paid for for the past 16 years.

I'm a fairly regimented maintainer of records associated with the cost and frequency of repairs and upgrades.

Doing some math associated with what my 19 year old car has cost per month for the last 16 years (since pay-off) I've found that my monthly payment has been ~ $32.00.

Even including the 36 months of bank note payments during the initial purchase period, my total extrapolated monthly cost has been about $110.00.

If your costs are somewhere near where mine are, installing $1,000.00 worth of new parts and pieces still makes good sense.

 

Agreed with Turbolink. It's so cheap to maintain this car. Even with repairs that come up time to time (months or even years at a given time. My last repair was last year and the one before that was 2yrs ago). Having no car note is one of the best feelings in the world. Just put money aside if repairs do come up. Be prepared for it.

The cost of owning this car the past 6years has not been more than $130 a month. Always find it to be in the $50-100 max range depending on the repair that comes up. That is stupid cheap. The Avg car payment is nearly $500 per month! Let alone with deappreciation worries, interest, higher insurance, repairs still do come up on the newer cars! and maintenance! Less is more.

 

A decent 4th Gen is rather cheap now. Many have over 100k miles left in them after some work.

I'd estimate up to 10 years of driving for a 3000 dollar total investment. That's 25 dollars a month.

it's also a fun ride for less than a dollar a day .

 

Think of the money you save on insurance. That pays for the car and any mid-life maintenance you might need.

It seems like $20 is a fair price for a used car -- that is if you are in 1971. Brings back memories of my first car that I bought for $20 though it needed a battery before I could drive it. I kept it for a summer then sold it.

The car was a 1961 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 like the one in the picture.

 

I bought my 01 se for $1300 and that was too much. Nissans don't keep there value. I love the KBB and NADA because of them i get maxima's for cheap.
