I have 5th Gen and I used aftermarket key fob and it works just fine. Saved a lot of money. The important thing is you need to take to dealer to get programmed.

The company will tell you how to program your key fobs. I got 2 after market fobs. They work okay. The little icons wear off the buttons fast, but they work. The original fob rolled the windows down when you held the unlock button for longer than 5 seconds. The after market ones don't.

My aftermarket five dollar self-programmed fobs roll my windows down in my 2003 SE. Try reprogramming yours with the above video.

My '96 came with no remotes. I bought a used OEM remote real cheap on eBay and later put it in a new replacement case. That one still works great a decade later. At some point I bought a second remote from Keyless Ride. It worked, but I had to press and hold each button noticeably longer than the stock remote. It did not work well to roll down the windows. The last time I tried to replace the battery in that remote it stopped working and the LED would stay on all the time except when pressing a button. I gave up on it and stuck with the old OEM one.

All of the remotes I programmed myself in the driveway using the steps in that video.

I found my cheap fob requires about a full second push to lock or unlock, but otherwise it works fine.
