What's your engine oil and filter of choice?

Hello there,
Excuse me if this topic not allowed here in this section, although I can't see why not!
My 09 and 11 now both using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 and Nissan OEM filter. Definitely quieter than Mobil 1 EP I was using prior, but turns darker faster, could be more detergent activity.
Please share your experience.

Castrol GTX and OEM filters @ 4000 intervals for the past 50 years. Used to run synthetic in a Harley, but was probably an unnecessary expense - My rational was it was an air cooled engine.

I was waiting for that Lt, lol
Since what mileage you're using Mobil1 oil and filter? I extensively used Mobil1 and their filters for the 2002 and 2003, initially used it for the 09 and 11 but Pennzoil seemed to quieten the engine more, though turns black much more faster (don't know if thats better or no).
i think what works in your car with your kind of mileage can be safely said to be the best, though you have a different environment of operation than mine (kinder weather and more interstate driving).

Most of the time Valvoline syntethic, sometimes Mobil 1, depending on the deals, K&N filter or Mobil 1. Sunday I used Penzoil synthetic for the fisrt time, every 3000 miles.
Now, my question is, 3000 miles is a short period of time? Should I keep that interval? Same with the oil filter?

Since first oil chage at 1000 miles
but
Remember i live in Florida and dont have any cold weather but for the few trips back to the Ozarks.
90 percent of my mileage is turnpikes, toll roads and 4 lane US highways so very little stop and go (I didnt change brake pads until 250,000 miles)

I was a big quaker state hybrid fan until moving to Fl but found it hard to get consistently so switched to Mobil 1 in 2006.

But everyone has their favorites, mine works for me. I DO BELIEVE that the real key is staying consistent with your maintenance routines whither 3000, 5000 or 7500 (ok, so not ready to go that long an interval!!!)

You'll get many die-hard people on the internet saying you're wasting oil. Swearing synth oil should last you 7.5k to 15k.
if you ask me, I'd never go more than 4k to 5k on any oil, no matter what. And I'd be more concerned about the oil filter flow then too.
The VQ engine is HARD on oil, shearing it fast. Especially if you do a lot of city driving and stop and go in bad (cold sub 30F or hot 80F or hotter) weather.

These cars are hard on oil. Should do an oil analysis but Ill just stick to 5K intervals.

I do an O&F change every 5000 miles.....was using a Nissan oil filter, but I just switched to using a Mahle OC-711 and I buy 100% full synthetic 5W-30 for around $2.30/qt when it's on sale. I quit changing the drain plug gasket too...it's pretty much a waste of time for me.

It doesn't matter what you use. Just be diligent and consistent with your maintenance schedule. EVERYTHING is so much easier to work on if your oil is changed regularly. Letting oil go is the worst thing you can put an engine through.

Red Line 5W30 and WIX every 5k for me.

Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5W30 and Fram Ultra or Wix oil filters is all I use, I've read some good stuff on oil forums about the Fram Ultra oil filters being one of the best in the market, these are not your average Fram orange can oil filters that the interior elements are flimsy. The Fram Ultra is their premium quality filter, Wix has been around for ever as well and is very good quality oil filter.

Few years ago I was always hearing Fram is crap, but the trend now is that Fram ultra is a good filter. Beside Mobil1, Wix or Napa ones.
I used to use Mobil1 110A(rather than what book calls for the standard M108a), a taller version.

Yes Napa gold oil filters are wix oil filters they're really good. Fram had a bad run for a while with the orange oil filters, but since they've got their Fram Ultra line out it's their flag ship filter and this thing is well built I've cut one open a while back just to see how it held up at a 6000 mile oil change interval and looked pretty damn good. There's a lot of info on oil forums about it, I use and trust the Fram Ultra, Napa gold or Wix filters any day. You can't go wrong with the Mobil oil filters either. Imo keeping with a consistent oil change interval with a reputable brand oil and filter change each time should serve our 7th gens very well or any vehicle for that matter!

Its kind of weird my service engine light came on before it was time to change the oil about a 1000 more miles to go,, got the oil changed at the dealer , reset 1 week or so later light came back on had it checked P0011 code at the dealer, talking about 3,500 in repairs ,timing cover not under warranty , they said they had to remove the engine to get to the cover to remove it,, i had three Standard oil changes since then. I started going to Valvoline Service Center and getting Full synthetic High Mileage with Maxlife™ Technology two 3000 mile oil changes later ...THE LIGHT JUST WENT OUT,, the car ran great the whole time ,,interesting

because it recommended, and I have used it before on my other maxima, i mean can i switch to 5W-30 or should i stick with what i been putting in it 0W-20. this is what i got from google..The 2018 Nissan Maxima has a 3.5 liter engine in their S, SL, SV, SR and Platinum models. Possibly because of that, all of these Maxima trims use the same viscosity of oil. All of the Maxima models use 5.1 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic oil....not saying that i choose 0W-20 because it said to, i chose it because its what i ran in my other maximas and my brother as well and father did as well in their maxi

Negative on that. The manual states Nissan reccomends 5W-30, Not sure if it's different for other gens but for our 7th gen Maxima's it's 5W-30 as the recommended spec.

If you have a 8th gen then it may recommend 0W-20, This is the 7th gen thread and ours recommends 5W-30. If you have a 2018 and it's specified 0W-20 and that's what your using then your fine, Your in the 7th gen threads and our cars are specified to use 5W-30 hence the reason you maybe seeing everyone here using 5W-30.

I would stick to 5w30 for the 7th gen. But still, maybe there's a point that Nissan changed the oil recommendation(CAFE?) but the VQ 3.5L engine didn't change (at least much)!. Would be interesting if someone uses 0w20 or 5w20 for their 09 to 14!

I told him our vehicles are specified for 5W-30 and he's in the 7th Gen threads so hence why he's seeing a lot using 5W-30. I don't really follow much of the other threads for other gens except to see the project cars, So I'm not sure if he's seeing other members on the 8th gen threads using 5W-30 and that's his concern maybe.

Rare to see any recent vehicles (2015+) recommend anything other than 0 or 5w20... Fuel economy restrictions companies are obligated to follow

I was using Pennzoil and Amazon but I switched to Costco brand Kirkland 5w30 synthetic. It is $12.50 for a 5 quart jug when you buy 2.

For filters I usually use the Mobil 1 108A.
