97 maxima 5 speed tranny over haul parts/kit
Anybody know where i can get genuine nissan parts for a 97 maxima 5 speed overhaul parts, bearings, synchros, seals, i had decided to get a used one but most are really high miles and it's a gamble , my mechanic says he could overhaul it for me so im not sure if this is the right way to go, my mechanic works at nissan so im hoping he has done a few, just my opinion , if anyone knows please help me out, he says not to get chinese made so im hoping i can get a descent price with genuine ones somewhere..
One of our members overhauled one of these several years ago. He posted excellent photos and instructions. I don't recall who it was.
I think that if you would do a Google search on our forum, you might find it.
Some questions:
Your previous post said that you have 167,000 miles on your car.
How many more miles do you intend to drive it?
How many miles do those used transmissions have on them.
How many miles do you consider "really high"?
Our transmissions require GL-4 oil.
Some transmissions go bad after running on GL -5 oil for a long time.
Some thoughts: many of our members have 200, 300, 400 thousand miles on their cars. Most still have their original transmissions. Those might have "really high" mileage on them, yet work quite well.
I have been on this forum for years. Our transmissions rarely fail.
I expect that some or several of the available transmissions should work just fine for your needs.

Or.......
I have no idea where you are (typical with newest members), but Chrisman (around Nyack, NY)is selling his 98 5 speed and says it's in top condition in the used parts section here. Ask him what exactly that means!

97 max 5 speed
It's actially 164, thousand plus miles so ivplan to keep it till 300 thousand plus, i also did not say it has failed but it's heading there there is a whine when you drive from 1 to 2 then when going to 3 you have to kind of look for it, sometimes you dont get it quite easy and i just go to 4th straight , so its not normal i drove my mechanic's and it doesnt have those issues, true a used one may be a better option buy i dont know what im getting into after it's been shipped and bolted on and i find an issue test driving, i m screwed , so i thought at least i know what's been replaced with mine when he bolts it back. Just a thought

I feel that our cars sell for 1000 to 1500 dollars these days. Their utility value to us is higher.
A used transmission will probably work ok. It's less money and less hassle than rebuilding what you have.
Of course, the word "probably " depends on statistics and luck. A second replacement transmission might bring the money and hassle factor over the effort to rebuild what you have.
True, a rebuild would last as long as you need it to.
This also gives you the opportunity to install a new clutch. Which most of us long term owners need to deal with sooner or later.
Good luck with your project!
