Hi all,
I just attempted a radio upgrade to get Apple CarPlay.
- CarPlay shows in the menu but grayed out. Press CarPlay and screen says to connect to USB1 again. Tried with different USB cables and get no further. Checked plug in console connection for USB1 and retried, and it plays music off my phone, but CarPlay still grayed out. Got my iPhone SE 2020 Bluetooth paired to upgraded unit fine. NAV works.I did answer ‘decline’ on first startup to connecting to Nissan Services/data sharing.
- Backup camera does not work. Unable to get to ‘hidden menu’ referred to in other threads.
Background…
Bought a used unit for a ‘17 Platinum that had a NAV card in it. I checked that the NAV card # is for a ‘17.
’16 SL radio model #25915-4RA1B, ‘17 Plat. Model #25915-9DD1E.
I switched over from my 16 SL unit, the white unit that was attached to the bottom of the radio (not sure what that is for), the mounting brackets, and the climate control unit to the 17 radio.
The photo shows the new used unit with my transplanted parts & the connectors that were included but cut off. I obviously removed these connectors before install. NOTE, in my wiring after disconnect from the old unit I don’t find a brown USB connector to go into the far right of the 3 USB connections on the back. Only a black connector & a blue connector.
Unless I accidentally put the black connector in the brown connector slot, which I don’t think so as I took a photo b4 disconnecting the old unit, it look like there was no brown USB connected to the brown slot ( looks empty).
Right now I took the upgraded radio out of the car. I’m at a loss of solving this one. I checked all my connections b4 deciding to take the upgraded unit out.
Thanks for the reply skydeaner. Well, I’ve been somewhat lucky. Here’s an update…
I got CarPlay working, although not seamlessly.Ended up removing the head unit completely and then re-installed & made sure every connection in the back was in solid. Then made sure that my iPhone SE (‘20) had Siri enabled (from an online article suggestion). While the CarPlay menu option on the radio is grayed out, I press it & get screen message something like ‘reconnect usb1 for CarPlay’. After I do CarPlay starting message appears and I have CarPlay access! Not seamless but it works! I’ll live with the clunky steps for now.
On the backup Camera, I finally got into the hidden menu, and found the menu item and changed to ‘Camera only’ and my backup camera works!
With some patience, some post help here and online, it was worth this Journey. Paid $287 on eBay for the ‘17 Head unit and hope to sell my ‘16 head unit to recoup most of that cost.
Update….
I got CarPlay working after a 2nd install attempt making sure all connections were solid, and making sure Siri was enabled on my iPhone SE. Apple CarPlay is grayed out on the Menu, but I select it anyway, it tells me to connect to USB1, which I do again, and it finally comes up. Clunky to get it going but it works!
I also was able to access the hidden menu and selected ‘Camera only’ and now my rear view camera works great now. All in all, well worth the $287 for the ‘17 radio and some extra effort. I hope to recover some of that cost by selling my ‘16 radio on eBay.
