My '90 Saved My Life

Hey everyone, just posting this story for the hell of it:

I used to have a '90 SE, until I got into a little accident. I was going down a two-lane highway when my friend in the passenger seat shouted quickly that I had to make a left, so without looking I made the sharp left, going about 35 miles an hour. What I didn't know was a Ford Explorer was going 65 miles an hour down the other way, and it hit me on the passenger side going 56 miles an hour. The Explorer smashed into my car, flipped over it, about 6 feet as my friends driving behind me told me, and rolled on the ground (she was ok, and pulled herself out of her totalled car). So anyways, my friend in the passenger seat had a little concusion (not sure if that's the right spelling) and was out of it for about four hours. And for me, I was perfectly fine, had no cuts, no bruises, only some cuts from my windshield that they had to brake to pry me out of my car with the jaws of life. My point is, a huge *** SUV smashed into my car, and if I would have been driving a Honda or anything not as firm and stable as the Max, me and my friend would have had some serious injuries...anyways I'm trying to get my pics back, but just wanted to assure everyone that the car they have is A GREAT CAR!! I'll try to post pics ASAP, (my friend has them right now)

Did you know that Explorers have a death rate of 1.1 per 100 million miles driven (NHTSA), while the average for passenger cars is 1.5? What aren't safe are the tiny, skimpy little civics and such that can't absorb major collisions. Say what you want about SUV's but Full-Size vans are heavier and larger(Econoline 250/350), yet nobody knocked them when they were first produced. Plus, a building or large Oak tree would have a similar effect on a Civic. Make the smaller cars safer + make vehicles handle better + better training = lower death rates on today's highways, which by the way has been declining since the 80's, before SUV's were even really popular.

best place to be is in behind one.. that way he can't run you over, and if they DO hit anything, just follow the truck through the wreckage and you'll make it through unscathed. the damage will be whatever's in front of it, not behind it!

Just because an SUV can absorb collisions doesn't mean that they can't CAUSE accidents.

A properly driven and maintained vehicle will not cause an accident. Negligent owners/drivers as well as faulty equipment manufacturers are what cause accidents. Even if equipment fails, (like a tire blowing out) the vehicle can still be driven (Flat tires don't stop people in my neighborhood). Granted, a blowout is much more serious than a flat, but panic is what causes a bad situation to become dangerous and even fatal. You have obviously fallen to the EPA's hype over the evil SUV's. SUV drivers are not killers or even bad people, they are people that are willing to trade some gas mileage and handling for inclement-weather capability, better cargo capacity and a greater amount of protective mass. Plus they're far more stylish than a minivan. What pray tell makes an SUV SO much more dangerous than a full-size pickup or a full-size van BTW?

F***!!!!! This is the second time I have read a story like this, in which I have the exact same car bieng hit (1990 SE), and to top it off one of my a****** friends has a ford explorer, and he can't drive for s***! This just brings the ods of me bieng hit by a Ford Explorer higher. I hate those damn things they are so ugly! Im staying off the road when he is on it.

Your correct. Negligent drivers cause accidents. But it's harder to control an SUV over a coupe or sedan. I see SUV's at the mall that can't even park straight!! What I mean to say is that SUV's are not easier to control when in a panic situation such as losing control or tire blow out. Also, Ford Explorers are known to have faulty tires for those that haven't replaced the originals. SUV's also have a harder time checking their blind spot (which also causes accidents. This happened in my accident with an Explorer). SUV, minivan, truck.. they are similar. They are big vehicles compared to coupes and sedans. I'm not saying I hate everyone that drives SUV's. I'm just saying I do not like people who can't control their SUV.

Glad to hear you're ok. It's comforting to know that the Maxima is a pretty heavy and solid car. I can tell the difference when driving Hondas that they seem a bit lightweight in comparison.

Most SUVs don't have crumple zones so they don't "give" in an accident. When a truck hits a regular car, there's usually not much damage but the car is all smashed. Crumple zones are designed to absorb most of the impact to protect the passenger cell, which is most important. The passenger cell should stay intact as much as possible to shield the occupants from intrusion. Mercedes patented crumple zones way back in the early sixties.

Sometimes Exploders tailgate me, which makes me worry if I have to brake hard, they might hit me. But I usually ignore them or go around corners fast, and they'll slow down, lest they get nervous of having a high center of gravity.

Check out this picture of the "big, tough, and macho" F150 pickup in the 40mph crash test.

The whole cheap plastic interior is mangled! That's built Ford tough for ya!

SUVs are not the problem it is the drivers who buy SUVs to make up for their bad driving that are the problem. Many people buy SUVs because they feel they would be safer in an accident and end up driving with the menality that they are invincible and end up driving like they are invincible. My Bronco II is probably one of the more dangerous vehicles out there and cost Ford more money in lawsuits than you could imagine. However I have never even came close to flipping it because I realize what I am driving.

They should almost make a class for driving SUV's. They are so slack about driver's ed and stuff and no one know's anything about driving and there you go...

'94 explorer hit me monday

I was going straight down a small street near my high school in my '93 gxe, and the explorer made a left right in front of me. The cars on the side of the streets blocked his view I guess. He got the citation because he had a stop sign. Car was considered totalled before the accident due to hail damage, so I'm not sure what's going to happen next. I had a wsp y-pipe, carsound cat, tsudo muffler, and wsp cai. If anyone is interested in any of these things, not sure if anything is broken yet, I'll probably be selling what I can if the car doesn't get fixed.

I have a '91 SE (VG), if the Y-pipe/Cat fit it, how much?

I'm not sure how much I would sell it for, but it may be awhile for the insurance to clear everything up, so I can decide.
