What type of potential does a well taken car of VE have?

In my search for an immaculate VE, I've come across only automatics. Some have been really low miles and in perfect condition. It the tranny has been well taken car of, along with the rest of the car, are the trannys fairly efficient and quick (for autos). I ask because last year I rode in a friends 92 VE auto and it seemed pretty fast and the tranny made some really odd shifts. When it would hit redline and shift, the sound would drop for a few milliseconds and than roar back up right before I think the tranny would complete the gear change. I cant really describe it, but it sounded really cool...lol. Well, my actual question is....is the auto worth it? Can it be built up to run hard? And if built up, can it challenge some of these 5spd VE guys?

I've driven in an auto VE, and it felt pretty good, but it's nothing compared to my 5 speed. If you want your Maxima to run hard, I sugguest sticking it out until you find a nice manual car, you'll definitely be happier in the end.

Yeah, I used to have a 94 SE 5spd, but it was wrecked. Looking to rekindle that flame.

The only way to make a VE auto tranny get anywhere near close to the speed of a 5 spd is to have Level 10 do about $3000 in work on it and put in a high stall torque contertor (another $400).

now for price comparisons..
My 93 SE 5 spd. $2800. rebuilt tranny + act clutch +new engine and tranny mounts = $1100
short shifter = free. (modded stock shifter)
CAI and UDP = $275.
Total cost: $4175.
1/4 mile time? 15.0x on my second run ever. surely break 14s if I go again.

good condition VE auto : $4000
Level 10 tranny + goodies = $4000.
other engine mods (just say CAI and UDP), $275.
total cost: $8275.
1/4 mile time? 15.3 if you're lucky.

IMO, don't consider an auto at all if you want a quick max. Took me 4 months to find a 5 spd Max, and I'm very glad I waited. there were dozens of nicer condition autos, but I would have kicked myself afterwards had I bought one.

Ditto.

Took me a few years to find my VE 5-speed. (don't ask)

I think it was worth it.
