Clutch and transmission repair/replacement cost

I have a '91 Maxima SE with 173,678 miles on it. I'm hearing a knocking sound when the car is in gear, particularly annoying when in the lower gears and at speeds of < ~45MPH. I'm getting anxious, and believe that the transmission, or it's appendages are starting to crap out.

I live in Maryland, and was wondering what the potential cost of repairing/replacing the transmission would be.

BTW, I still get good power(engine idles correctly/quietly), and my gas mileage is ok.
