Put shifter to 1
Brake torque to about 1.5K ~ 2K
When light turns green, let go of brake
Go until your tach reaches redline
Push shifter to 2
Go until tach reaches redline
Push shifter to D

Poor 5th gens ... can't reach redline without manually shifting.

Yeah, I wish it would automatically. Our shift mapping is more appropriate for the 4th gen VQ30DE engine. Your shift mapping is more appropriate for the 5th gen VQ30DEK engine.

Technic:

Turn off O/D, it will allow the TC to lock up not only in 4th, but 3rd gear also
Press brake
Slightly press accelerator and hold it near 1,200rpms
slam on accelerator when light turn green
Let off brake ASAP
shift from gate 1 to gate 2 at 5,900rpms (it will shift at 6,500rpms)
Shift from gate 2 to gate D at 6,400rpms (it will shift at 6,500rpms)
hit the o/d button at 6,400rpms (it will shift at 6,500rpms)

This is only benefits 2000-2001 Maxima automatics. The 2002's shift mapping allows them up shift right at redline.

1st gear: shift at 6100rpm so it will go to 6600(redline)
2nd and 3rd gear at 6300rpm so it will go to redline too which is at 6600

set shifter in 1st gear position....run tach to redline...move shifter into second position...run tach to redline...mve shifter to D position run tach to redline..repeat process until transmission blows
no auto trans is meant to be shifted manually unless its a tiptronic type ala Porsche etc

Hmm. Though it makes sense your way i have to counter by saying i feel that Nissan *wants* those with auto's (at least the 2k2's) to be able to manually shift it given the gated shifter.

In fact they tout it as a way for the owners to also be "spirited drivers" when the need arises.

Otherwise Nissan wouldn't beef up the tranny nor offer the gated shifter in the first place.

My 2k2 goes all the way to redline when I have it floored. And don't shift at redline for 2 reasons:

1) that's not the optimal shift point
2) there is a 200-450 RPM lag when shifting the auto manually, so if you shift at redline, you will hit the rev limiter

OIC now that you have a 2k2, just let if shift by itself because it redlines, even though its not optimal. I'll trade you TCM's

No need to manual shift a 2K2 auto since it goes all the way to redline with wot.

I guess we'll know soon enough if Nissan did what they said they did after all the 2k2's start racking up miles.

i know manually shifting is bad, and its not nearly as bad as a neutral drop, but how many times can you do it (on a 95) before it starts killing your tranny?

Regarding the beefed up tranny: I'd like to belive Nissan beefed it up for 2k2 as much as anyone, but when Don did my VB, he said the vbs were exactly the same as the 2k-2k1 and that he didn't notice any difference in the rest of the tranny. I may contact nissan and find out. Does anyone know where I can find a statement of Nissan saying they beefed it up?

I know i shouldn't doubt Don but did he look at the torque convertor and the rest of the transmission internally?

Anyway, per Nissan's website:

All 2002 Maxima GXE and GLE models come equipped with a standard 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (optional on SE), which has been strengthened for use with the 3.5-liter V6.
Taken from here

I didn't think there was anything wrong with manualy shifting your auto? All your doing is keeping it in gear for another 300? RPM, and telling the computer when to shift. I shift right at the redline on my '96 auto and theres no lag atleast no rev limiter bouncing.

Shift from gate 2 to gate D at 6,400rpms (it will shift at 6,500rpms)
hit the o/d button at 6,400rpms (it will shift at 6,500rpms)

A few weeks ago, I did a similar sequence, without knowing the real figures... As soon as I pushed the auto lever in the #2 position it did a loud sound (like a hammer hitting the tranny). Since then, I never did it again...

Is it normal?

right click n save, listen...I do it all the time. This race was on a stock tranny.
Now my L 10 tranny has a control for firmness of the shift, and deceleration control, which has yet to be tested on the auto X course.

very very nice....

1 on the stalk, is a low range gear. 1st gear in D is not. Think of it as to snow and not to snow.

So the Maxima automagic has a two speed transfer case!

Dayum...a lot of the newer SUV's don't even have those nowadays!

P.S.: What are you smoking?

triptronic

All i have to say is it will not be to long before someone rigs up a triptronic tranny. This would be the best thing for our max's. Well next to haveing a 6speed MT..
