Worst D-I-Y ever...

... okay I made a mesh grill today and it was the worst DIY mod I have ever tried to do. I was exhausted when I finished and generally not thrilled with the finished product. I get to spend tommorrow fixing the damn thing. I'm sure it will look good when I'm finally finished, no doubt, but if someone would have told me what I was getting in to before I started I wouldn't have believed them! I would have never thought that something that seems so simple could give me such a headache. Sorry, just had to vent on that...

Has anyone else had so much trouble? Maybe I was doing something wrong.... ??

The first time is the toughest

Hey man, the first time is tough. It takes a lot of cutting , fitting, adjusting etc. I actually did the first one and it took about three hours. I did not like it so I redid it. I might just do it again but may only paint it a idfferent color.

All I know is my hands were pretty nicked up but, the smile I get whenever I get a compliment makes it well worth it!

Well, I say time and time and time again when the mesh grille topic comes up that it's not near as easy as it looks (to make it look good, anyone can cut out bars and attach mesh). Most people are happy with their slapped-together grille, and probably dont even realize how crummy it looks. It's actually very hard to make a good looking mesh grille.

When I do grilles it takes me about a week, working a couple hours each day. Also, using a 92-94 grille probably wont make it much easier. It's pretty much the exact same concept/work that needs to be done, just that the 92-94 grille frames look better.

Here was my grille about a year ago before it got stolen!! I'm in the process now of making my replacement.

word of advice: don't play with mesh when you're drunk.

You were drunk? You... didn't actually want to mesh your grille did you? You know, kinda like when drunks get tattoos and don't remember?

Oh, I guess that was probably my problem too!
I redid it today and it looks much better. I'm gonna paint it tommorrow. I used clear silicone indoor/outdoor sealant to hold it in, BTW...

I just didn't realize how much went in to doin it! It doesn't look as good as the one James did, but it looks real good still. I like it. Kinda makes me even more scared to take on the BMW headlights, though. I have been toying with doing that for like 2yrs. now. I don't think I'm going to after this...

Dude, where ya been??
I wrecked my Maxima yesterday morning, the morning after I finished the grill, so all your gonna see is a mangled mess of what it was.
Oh, and no I haven't gotten my wing yet. It is tied up in the postal system... should be here by Friday though.
Give me a call or e:mail. I was beginning to wonder if you were still alive...

How the hell did you wreck your Max? You were tryin' to be like me weren't you? j/k I'm on Spring Break. I'm down here in KY fixin' my car and at the end of the week I'm going on a short trip with my buddies. They all have little import cars and they said they'd pay for my room if I drove the Max.

I have to agree on this being one of the most underestimated mods ever. i made the mistake of doin mine while it was cloudy outside in the garage. Paint didn't totally dry, had to sand it back down to the plastic and start over, etc. I did the 92 grill and cut out all the stuff in the middle i'll post the pics as soon as i'm finished.
