Thank you!!!!!!!! I noticed that on my car since day one! I just though it was a quirk I'd have to live with. Well, when I get my first oil change (tomorrow) I'll have them look at it.

Do I just go to the dealer and tell them the tsb number or do I have to print that pdf file out and show it to them? I was wondering if the dealer will just take my word for it or will they try to test it out themselves? The hood problem only happens on high speeds, but it looks fine from the outside, no mis-alignment.

I have that shifting driver seat problem, but I can't repeat it with the service manager in the car cause it doesn't happen all the time.

It really depends on the dealership...
I usually tell my dealer my problem and leave it for the day.. They check it out and most of the time, if they find the problem they fix it. If not they call me and let me know that I've wasted their time.. LoL..
Some dealers will laugh in your face if you bring in the print out and call it internet junk...
You're better off explaining to them in full detail what your problem is..
Don't go in and just say, oh I think this is broken..
And if they cant help you, just visit another dealer..
Nissa is a bit*h when it comes to afterservice... You have to work your way to get things done... Tell them that your seat problem only happens once in a while and it's getting annoying.. Let them know that you aren't there to play around and your problem shall be solved...

I haven't noticed any hood vibration so far BUT I have noticed something else about the hood on the ' 02. The hood : fender gap or seam is unequal on one side vs. the other. This misalignment is more noticeable if you look at the nose of the hood where it contours with the grill. I checked about a dozen 2002 Maximas at the local dealership. All had the same misalignment to some degree. Most comparable to mine. A couple slightly better and a couple slightly worse. And it doesn't look like correcting the hood : fender seam will completely correct the misalignment at the hood nose / grill. The bumper may be off a bit as well. I'm reluctant to let service tamper with the hood because the fix may cause the hood to start vibrating. BTW, push down on the nose of the hood where the latch is located. Notice the play of ~ 1/8 inch ?

THANK YOU!

Anonymous Member,
Do you have a TSB for the Drivers' side mirror? It also wobbles at HWY speeds.

If anyone fixes this THEMSELVES let me know what you did. I'm hesitant to allow a Service Tech take my car out on the HWY, so I'm going to attempt to do this myself.

Thanks again!

I believe I know what's wrong...

I think late production 2000 and ALL 2001 headlamps did NOT come with the "Headlamp Pack"(rubber seal) on the top of each headlamp. I noticed this when I replaced mine with 2K2 headlamps and some people asked about transferring the "Headlamp Pack" to the new housings. I asked Dave Burnette and he said ONLY early build 2000 came with these. So, I forgot about it, but I always noticed "bug guts" got up under the hood right where that seal is supposed to be on both sides. Which seemed odd, but nothing major.

I think that seal is the culprit and that it does more than prevent debris and water from getting inbetween the headlamp and hood, it also stops air turbulance in the gap from wobbling the hood. An easy test should be to put a loose fitting piece of tape over the gap. Just enough tension to deflect air from the gap, not enough to hold down the hood and then go for a drive.

I noticed the exact same thing...the tabs of the hood on each the grill don't line up very well w/ where the bumper starts, I had one of the tabs sticking out further than the other but the gaps at the sides of the hood along the fenders looked perfect. What I found is that you can pull gently on the mounting brackets for the top of the bumper (each side of the grill) and pull out the top of the bumper to get better alignment with the tabs of the hood. As for as the 1/8" play, I think you will need some play so that the hood latch catches properly and doesn't bind. I do have that little bit of play, but I have not noticed any hood vibration on the highway.

Same here. Lots of highway travel. The drivers side of the hood flexes a good 1/2". Was going to have it looked at. Good to know Nissan has a TSB out.

Well I took the car to the dealer and he said that the hood only rattles because the strut bar doesn't let the hood shut down as "tight" as it did before. Now I gotta take it off and then go back to another dealer to see what they say. Is that suppose to happen? I know my is slightly harder to close after I installed my strut bar. And I know that the inside of the hood does touch onto the top of the strut bar when the hood is closed.

Re: Hood Rattle TSB

I noticed that this TSB only applies to 2001 and 2002. Anybody else out there with a 2000 with this problem? My hood vibrates at speed, the dealer adjusted something that fixed it somewhat (scratching the hood in the process!), but still vibrates some.

Just experienced the hood rattle - scarey!

Was on the Pa turnpike on a day w/strong wind gusts. During the drive (70 to 80 mph) I could see the rear edge of the hood buffet in the wind. On particularly strong gust made the hood seem like it was going to buckle, about mid-way up the hood on the drivers side. A couple of days later on the return trip, when the winds had died down, I did not experience any vibration of the hood at the same speeds. Anyone notice the rattle under high winds only? I am thinking that I may just ned the seals on the top of the headlights to keep the wind from pushing up into the engine bay. i guess I will have the dealer check it out, but I doubt he will experience the rattle if there isn't high winds...

Canaduh??

Anyone from Canada attempted to get this tsb done yet??

I've tried to get:

1.Missing fuel filler guard fix
2.Fuel cutoff/ecu upgrade fix

But I keep getting same old "thats a Nissan North America tsb number ya got there" line.

I've called Nissan Canada about this but they just tell me that my point was taken down and that the equivalent Canadian TSB's will come out when they see it fit.

feelin' left out,
rerunn.

send me your email address
studman@webslapper.com

If someone emails it to me, I'll host it on a fast and reliable connection.

As a matter of fact, if someone wants to send me all the TSBs for the 2000+ Maximas, I'll host them all.

Hood vibe on 2003 Maxima

I thought they fixed this problem in the middle of the 2002 model year run!!! I have a 2003 SE with 13k miles on it and I experienced this the other day. Gusty conditions at 70-75 mph and the sun was out so there was a very noticeable reflection (i.e., wobble) from the hood vibrating. Didn't hear anything, though. Hood seems to be aligned well and there is a slight ~1/8th of an inch play in the hood's center latch. I have a hard copy of the TSB but it says this problem doesn't apply to my 2003 vehicle. Hmmm... Anybody else with a 2003 Max have this perceived problem?

Pegasus:

I had the exact same problem...even the same color car as yours.

What they did is adjust the hood stops to tighten it up. The front and left were too loose. There was no charge. They did not do the adhesive thing of gluing the metal supports to the hood.

thanks

Vic,
I adjusted the two rubber hood stops 1/4 turn (CCW) and will see if that helps. I have yet to find a local dealer that is helpful when it comes to these "little" things. THX, Peg1113

Flimsy hood skin... I seem to remember reading that someone pressed the center of his hood to close it and left a nice little dent, or maybe it was the oil change guy. This weekend I removed the driver side insulation and was poking around. I noticed the rear driver corner of the hood skin has no support and feels very soft. The rear brace is several inches away. Sitck your finger inside the hole and press up, and on the outside press down, do this lightly... in the right light you will see just how flimsy the skin is. I don't know how you would go about creating support for that large portion of the skin that has no support. I tried sealing up that area between the headlights and hood thinking air was being driven up in there at speed, but nothing helped.

I put black tape on the hood hook , thus it elimates the noise and rattels, if there is a tsb out, it should be fixed by dealer.
