Front Stuts and Strut Bearings
Front Stuts and Strut Bearings
I have a "95 GXE with 105K miles. There is a light bumping noise from the front struts area when backing out of the garage or when the car is sitting still and the steering wheel is turned back and forth. I was told this could be the front strut bearings causing the noise. Has anyone had this problem and if it is the bearing, should I have the front struts replaced while it is torn down. I have never replaced the original ones. A local garage wants about $350 to replace the struts and another $100 for the bearing. Does this sound reasonable.
What kind of struts will they give you?
You have to disassemble the strut/spring unit to fix the gearings, so you might as well get some decent struts in there while you're at it.
Mine were clunking really badly. I didnt replace them, but I greased them up really well when I redid my suspension and that fixed it.

They shouldn't charge you labor to replace the strut bearing if you are getting new strut. You should only pay for the part which is like $10. They would have to remove the strut bearing anyway to replace the strut.
Your strut bearings should cost you $40 a pair.Repalcing them should not be very difficult. My 95 max has 109000 miles and the problem has just started to appear.See if you can use the same struts they should be OK if you haven't been very rough with your car. It's not worth spending $400.
Take care
