VW 1.8T doesnt play!!
VW 1.8T doesnt play!!
I was shocked by this! i knew the VW 1.8T was a fast engine (i think it was a Passat 1.8T, the car was debadged except for the 1.8T badge), but not that fast! i was cruising down I-95 today and i saw one, i made sure it was a 1.8T before i made my move to race him so i would know i at least had a challenge kuz ive heard they are pretty fast. well i passed him and he took off from about 3 or 4 cars back and blew by me (this was b4 i raced him) then i came back up beside him and lined up....turned on hazards and he wouldnt budge from beside me, he would always wait til he was behind me a little ways b4 he would take off. but the best time i "raced" him he took off from about half a car behind...i wasnt ready so he did get a good jump on me...but i figured i would just run him down soon after and pass him and take the win. he walked away like hell!! i was runnin around 125-130 when i slowed...he didnt pull anymore after 120 but he was already so far ahead it didnt matter. im 2k1 automatic, with K&N drop in (thats all for right now), im at around 30000 miles and due for an oil change and all that good stuff and i REALLY NEED tires. but anyway....that damn VW 1.8T walked a hell of a lot harder than than my friends '96 Z28 camaro (also automatic)! was he sprayin laughing gas or modded or just manual or somethin or are those just that damn fast?? anyway...that little car would fly! thats all i can say.....
those fockers are fast, but i raced my friends volvo s40 1.8t and that thing can hawl major @$$ on the highway. First run i had with him i had 6 people in my car and it walked on me so bad i almost cried. A week later me and him are at it again on the interstate but this time we are both alone in our cars, we had two runs. First run i left it in D and just floored it, i pulled ahead first but later the volvo creeped up and then started pullin away
. Second run I shifted into 2nd then we floored it and the volvo could never catch up with me , but he did hang with me real good at around my rear bumper.
Btw. his volvo is bone stock

Passat's don't come with a "1.8T" badge stock. The V6's have the "V6" badge but the 1.8T ones are unmarked.
Since has had a 1.8T badge, you could consider him modded, and he definitely had more mods than just the badge!

Definitely chipped

It was modded.
My wife just got a 2k2 Passat stock 1.8 turbo 5 speed and I was driving it w/o her in the car
and it was ok but I am POSITIVE that I could take it in my max. I was actually thinking about putting a chip in her car. But then she would outrun me and we cant have that.

A chip will add anywhere from 30-60 HP on the 1.8T DBW car's depending upon the year and engine code. The computer controls the boost on all of the 1.8t's so when you chip it it changes the boost levels which is the reason for the jump in power.
A chip, 3" downpipe, and exhuast will usually net 200 WHP. Beyond that you have to modify the intercooler and turbo. There are some 1.8t's running around with T3/T4E turbos and big intercoolers making over 400HP on the stock block. Here is an example of one of these cars. Enjoy

Nice to see the Maximas and 1.8Ts playing nice with each other.
That guy you ran was most likely chipped...at least. He probably had a larger DP/cat too as that is a common mod (it also has huge gains for us).
As a point of reference I own a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg 1.8T. I'm making ~215hp and 245ft-lbs with just a chip (I have a BOV but that nets 0 gains as I'm sure you know). Those are advertised #'s as I've not been on a dyno yet. Many people with my APR chip (Audi Performance and Racing) have dyno confirmed even higher numbers.
I ran with a 5th gen the other day and it was fun and he was pretty surprised after a few runs down 476 (Philadelphia area).

Heya Maxima guys.
I heard we're talking about 1.8T's so i thought i'd chime in being an owner
Someone quoted 1.8T's as being mid 13 second cars with minor mods like chip/intake/downpipe and what not. that's not really accurate. while some guys have been able to get within the high 13's range, they usually have a few more mods. to give you guys an example, Drew at our site (www.20vturbo.com) ran a best of 13.75 with chip, race gas, drag radials, 3" downpipe, 2.5" catback exhaust, intake, and he might of had suspension at that time, can't remember, but most guy's with mods like that can net a low 14 second if it's a good day. but the ability of these engines can be streteched pretty damn far. i've got a little turbo project going on now, i've got an Innovative Turbo T3/T04E dual ball bearing, along with an ATP front mount intercooler i'm gonna mate up with ATP's stage IV kit. we're looking to push at least 320 to the wheels at about 20psi. we'll see if we can get there very shortly
have fun modding and never turn down an opporuntity to race a 1.8T, as i'm sure we won't turn one down to try and take one of you guys

Ahhh, well, yes i own a 1.8T GTI, if you can tell by my sig, and well, with suspention, intake, exhaust, chip yes our cars can run 13 1/4 times, and dont forget about the stage III kit cars, over 300hp at wheels, woooooo man!!!!! or how bout thoose twin turbo all wheel drive vr6s that are pushing over 403hp, from 0 to 60 in 4.4 secs during wet conditions
Im not bashing any of you cars so dont get me wrong
DOnt wanan start any problems between 1.8ts and maxima drivers
Dont let looks trick you, you never know what our lil 1.8ts can do!
And yet for me, all stock to say, and still pretty quick, besides HKS BOV and tints hehe wtich dont make any diffrece in performence, i mean the tints that is
Its cool to see that you guys arent bashing our cars, and were not bashing yours!
I know a jetta with exhaust, dp with highflow cat, chip, slicks, suspention and intake running 13.8.
ANd wiat till you race the Golf GTI, not saying Jettas are slow, but they do have that extra weight cuz of the 4 doors!!

Likey..
Yeah they have well built engines in them. And they are very light. How do they fair at high speed? 100-140 range? My buddy has one and I like it allot, pretty sharp car. How much did a chip run you and the downpipe? What will one run with those mods? Did I read low 14's?? I don't remember what I read. One time I got a crappy launch down shift at 50 and he stuck with me till about 90, then to 130 he had no chance.. That's where the 3.0 gets ya
We got some pretty sick guys around here to.. I'm waiting to see what this cat yo_its_ok bust out with
So it should be interesting, stick around.. I've been so busy working I haven't had the time to check in here much.. But I have to make that loot so I can feed my baby come some warm weather

2002 Max would of won
first off I have a 2002 SE Maxima with the 255 horses and My friend and coworker has the exact same Passat your talking about with the chip. I think my car would blow out his and the only edge he has is that the Passat is lighter. No way would a 4 cylinder even with the chip blow out the 3.5liter V6 that I have. but we have yet to race because he too scared to take on the Max. Personally I waited till this year to buy a Max, maybe the last or next to last of its generation they worked out all the bugs and perfected a already nice fast sports sedan. It moves and thats all stock, but he has a 98 Passat and thats all you have to say, the new Passats with the V8 will dominate, its all a race, the only way to stay ahead is if you have enough money to buy the newest thing as soon as it comes out.
But for this Scenario, the 2002 will dominate the 98 even with the chip

Ahhhh
Ahhh I see others have some anticipation for the _=Z=_ as well?? Very nice... My 2000 is starting to look a little ragged.. hmmm might just be around the right time when my lease is up ..
If I decide to do that.. The supercharger might not be worth it... But oh well we shall see how the Z performs..
Concerning the VW.. Indeed nice bang for the buck factor working. Def dig the dual positioning seat warmers...But the inside could be a little bigger.

the new W8 4Motion Passats are only going to be available in the US with AWD (4Motion) and only with an auto tranny.
My modded Accord V6 would beat one probably
My stock 4th Gen 5spd would thoroughly smoke one most likely too

its nice to have peeps with other cars join a thread and actually talk and compare cars, NOT BASH our cars.....thats really cool.
but i will say another thing about that little VW...it was a pretty tight ride, and fast too!
Hey all I really have to chime in about is wach out for these new little moters comeing out of germany. These guys are really no how to get a lot of power out of a small moter. we could only wish that the VQ30DE and the VQ35DE where like the VR6 or the 1.8T
it's good to see............
that we're all getting along here......nice to hear how we're comparing and giving props to each other's rides....rather than the typical "i can this" and "my this on my car will..." blah blah stuff. 1.8s are nice, modded 1.8s are even nicer, however, doesn't mean i wouldn't run with run at the light or freeway

I used to play around with my in-laws 300Z twin turbo...what a great car. He has since moved on Bimmers (blah), but I still think about that car.
Are there many, if any, forced induction Maximas? Do the naturally aspirated engines hold up well with FI?
I agree, it is nice to have people that respect other types of cars joining in. A friend of mine drives a 2000 Orange 1.8 T GTI. Right now his car isn't that fast as he only has a replacement exhaust and a K&N. He's been trying to decide between an upgrade to 300 hp for $3500 or 400 hp $5000 though.

The 1.8t is a great motor but the reality is any engine with a turbo has potential for huge performance gains. With chip, and 3" turbo-back exhaust my 1.8t picked up 42whp and 60ft-lbs. So, my car weighs in around 2800lbs with 200whp and 230ft-lbs. Your Maxima weighs 3200lbs with 217whp and 210ft-lbs. I think it would be a good race but also think you might be a little surprised...

One of my coworkers bought a 2002 Maxima and I will not argue the fact that it's fast. But he's afraid to race me...

Anthony
I have a SCed Maxima and my girl has a 1.8T Jetta 2k2. And those little 4cyl have great potential. I just ordered for her car the Neuspeed:chip, inlet pipe, downpipe, intake, intercooler pipe, and G2 Exhaust by greddy. My friend has the same set up and he takes mustangs, so they are very quick little cars, next is the T3/T4E upgrade!
400whp
400whp
My Dad had an interesting situation with an ugly black shoe-like Golf w/VR6. Travelling south on I-95, driving new 2k2 SE auto. Cruising at 80, 1/4 mile behind an Avalon, the vw pulls into right lane to TRY and pass. Nailed the throttle, jumped to 100, the s--t wagon could not handle it, got behind and acted like a spoiled child. Poor dummmy. Shoulda boughta Max.
Amazing, a few miles later a guy in a very tired late '80s accord tried the same thing. Don't these guys ever learn?
Then there's the guy in the hyundai accident (accent) driving at 45 in the left lane, won't move over. Where do these people come from?
96 GXE auto 145K+ still strong

Hello Maxima guys... I've got to say you people show a lot of class compared to what I see on a lot of other boards. I think it shows you are genuine car enthusiasts. I'd like to think we keep as balanced an outlook over at www.20vturbo.com In fact, there are a lot of Nissan fans over there.
I've owned several '70s Z-cars, and I've got one in my garage I'm restoring right now. My dad's an RX-7 guy, but when he decided it was time for a larger sedan, and didn't like the 626, I suggested he might like the performance of the Maxima, and it turns out, he drove one and bought it. (this was early '90s I think, his Maxima was a 3.0) I might still be in a Nissan, if they were making a performance-oriented, minimalist hatchback. VW, as far as I'm concerned, with the edition of the 1.8t to its line, owns that market right now.
A couple words:
1. Watch what you say about VWs being ugly. We're in the same boat here; I'm sure you consider you Maximas beautiful, and I consider my "shoe box" a goreous too. Most people (including cops) give niether your car, nor my car a 2nd look, except for that guy in the Mustang trying to figure out WTF just happened
2. Watch out for those 1.8t's
Peace.

Another thing to consider
The VW 20v/1.8t, like all of VW engines, starts making its torqu/power somewhere around 2000RPM. Add the chip, downpipe, exhaust to that engine, and the little VW becomes quite a runner. I would've bought one if my 6'2" body would've allowed my son to fit in the back in his carseat. Great little cars though.
