Autometer Gauges

i just want to know can an autometer gauge (the one with the rpm and shift lite) work on an automatic?..if so how?..if so then is it the same as installing it on an automatic?

is it rilly necessary for an auto, i guess cuz you can do that thing where u nudge it forward to the next gear, but cmon, with that auto you got lots of time to watch your tach creep towards the redline, for a manual i can understand, but only if supercharged or nitrious, otherwise we rilly dont hit the redline fast enuff cept in 1st.
