CONVERTING MANUAL vs. BUYING MANUAL (which is better)?

i'm making too many threads...sorry, but oh well, here's the deal...want a stick so badly, my d*ck is getting hard and it's costing me between 1200 and 1500 to get it added to my GLE but i can sell my car and get an SE wit stick and also have like an extra 1,000 bucks extra to spare (95 SE atleast 1,000 dollars cheaper than 95 GLE)....now which would be better...if i keep GLE, i still get that nice luxurious turn that that have and i can keep everything i have on my car and continue to work on more...if i get 95 SE, i have to take my old radio out and go through so much trouble just to strip the dam car, although at the end it will be worth it but I don't know what condition this car will be in...i'm so used to my GLE....plus i don't think stock SE's come in leather unless specified....so...if u guys were in my shoes, what would u do? that extra 1,000 can go into a VI, y-pipe, CAI...u know....what to do what to do.....

i'm looking at all the mods i put in this car...i changed all the speakers, i put freaking fogs in myself...dam man, i did so much for this car and i'm just gonna throw it away?! dam...gauges and all that good stuff...converting is starting to sound better...but man....i'm so confused right now.....

and i'm thinking about it...although it would cost like 1800 max to get conversion done, if i sell my auto tranny, the price won't be too bad...i mean i could sell it for atleast 700 right? auto is supposed to be more expensive than manual anyawy...it's a luxury thing....but who would buy it? a junk yard?

uh..what's wrong with conversion eh? mine went just fine hehe... and it only cost me 1000. selling your car and buying another car ... you will loose alot of money and spend alot more than conversion =P

Take all your mods off and sell the car and get you that SE that comes in 5 speed, you will save yourself lots of money and headaches!!!!

... I have to concur with Jay25. My 95SE 5spd came w/ all the toys (leather, fogs, heated seats/mirrors, sunroof, etc) except CD changer and power passenger seat. Just be patient and look around to get what you really want. You'd probably end up waiting a lot longer (no wheels at all) while waiting for the conversion to be completed.

BTW, you DO now how to use a clutch, right??? I only ask because I can't uderstand why anyone who knows how would by a performance vehicle with an automatic.

Good luck with you dillema.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in my opinion out of factory 5 speed is better then a converted car. I agree with the rest of people who said safe yourself the headaches and get a 5 speed SE.

No body ever mentions,

,yoour check engine light is probably on forever after a conversion. I hate that enough that I would rather buy a nice factory 5 speed with no extra auto harnesses layin all over the place.

Cool I new the ECU's got swapped also, but I mustav been thinkin wacky to think the Light would eb on........and I hope our not refeeriing to my credit as being good......

Um in Allstare tiyper!!!!

Well, for some of us who aren't exactly on the rich side and do not have good credit, getting a new car is out of the question. So, it is cheaper for SOME of us to convert to 5-speed.

I have a 5-speed ECU on my Auto anyway. Check engine light came on, revs jumped, I reset it, never happened again. I think for my situation, converting to a 5-speed is the thing to do. I have a 96' that just turned 60,000 miles. I can't find another Max in my area that will match those miles. I bought it a year and a half ago though with 34,000 miles. That was the deciding factor when I was searching for it.

Sentimental values are important and that should take precedence... assuming that you do have sentimental value in the car). If you plan on keeping the car for a long time to the point that resale value doesn't matter, then go ahead. However if resale value is important I would strongly suggest NOT to do the conversion. Its either take a hit in the wallet now...or later.

depends how bad you want a manual....

I kind of want one, but whatever.. i can live with my auto for the time being while I still have it. In NYC, you can enjoy having an auto a lot of the time

but if you are set that you must have stick... sell your car and find a loaded 95 SE 5spd, it will have all the options your car has.

through everyone's feed back when the time is right, i'm going for conversion. Reasons being:

1. My whole stereo system is changed in my car and to take all that out and rewire it into my new car, it would costs millions *joke*

2. My car IS setimental to me and although u can get similar features on an SE, from stock u can't get that nice turning power u get with GLE's, u know like that luxuy mercedes/Q45 type turning which I adore so much.

3. I don't know what problems a new car i get will have for me and i know exactly how my car runs now and plan to have it for a real long time.

4. There can't be any severe difference between factory stick and conversion stick

My main concern is finding someone to do this for me. I'm willing to go a week max without wheels...especially in summer with no school and i can bum rides with others. How long does it take anyway? most importantly, where did you get a manual trans for 1,000 dollars? i'm gonna check more garages but i really need to find someone who knows how and HAS done a conversion before...either in NJ, Penn, or NY, i'm willing to drive and leave my car anywhere in NJ or NY, not sure about Penn, but can someone answer the questions i presented...gotta keep my car...it's the right thing to do, plus so many people converted and no problems from what i hear....

Don't waste your time and money on swapping tranny. you're better off buying a manual se. If you're interested, mine is for sale, just email or post.

just remember to factor in taxes, inspection, and all the switching stuff of your new car. plus, you gotta remember all the sentimental value of your car, and the hassle of selling it. im in the same situation (damn GLE), and i still cant figure out what im gonna do.....

Seeing as you didn't even know what a socket wrench was when we were talking last night, Mecca, I'd say you better just buy a stick.

And what's your obsession with the steering on the GLE??? All Maximas have the same steering. It's all in your head.

That's not tru...my friend had a 92 max and the steering is different..more like a honda...and my friend's 97 SE is also a little stiffer...the GLE is real easy to turn like the mercedes and stuff....but i would rather do the conversion and it's not like I'll be doing it, oh hell no, i can barely change my oil...i'll have someone do it for me for sure, but someone who has done it already, i just need to know how much they would charge and how long it would take....and need to get my hands on a 12 month financing credit card

In that case, your friend just had a more worn Power Steering pump (or a bad serpentine belt, or something else) that caused his steering to be stiff.

Belive me. They are ALL THE SAME.

Ummm. No.

My best friend (ebmorgan on this board) has an I30. it's no different.

The two other cars you drove just had stiffer steering, not necessarily bad. Maybe your steering is bad?

Either way, they're the same.

ebmorgan was just over and we looked on our cars at the power steering assembly. 100% the same.

You're smoking crack.

There are 3 different steering racks.

1. 95-99 GXE, 95-99 GLE, 95-99 I30 (non touring), 95-96 SE

2. 96-97 I30t

3. 97-99 SE and 98-99 I30t

Nonetheless, he has a 95 GLE. Same as the GXE and SE of those years.

That does make sense, because ebmorgan has a non Touring I30.
Even I can be corrected sometimes.

But still, mecca, you have the "standard" steering.
