Whats up with my alarm....

I have a 1998 SE, with a factory alarm. I tried everything that I could do to try and set my alarm off, and I couldnt get it to go off. I know it works because I hit the panic button, and it worked fine..But I had my windows open , and put the alarm on, reached my hand in the door, and opened it, and nothing..WTF is with this thing ?? Anybody know ? Thanks

Do you do this immediately, or do you wait some time after shutting the door? The LED when flashing indicates it is armed. If it is solid, it is still in "pre arm" mode.

its not supposed to become solid - its just suposed to blink slower after about a minute...........if it still doesnt work - unplug the car battery - wait a few minutes and then connect it again

It should turn solid as soon as you arm, but the system doesn't activate until it starts blinking.

So immediately after arm: solid
After a short interval (30 / 45 secs?): blink every 2.4 seconds

You can only test the doors after it starts blinking.

yeah, I just did that, and it worked....but does the alarm have any kind of shock sensor or anything, because I'm putting in an entire new stereo in my car, and I would like it to stay there...

No shock sensor,
no motion sensor,
no glass breakage sensor,
no starter kill ('99s have the chip in the key),
no vehicle recovery (to disable the car if you get carjacked: the car just dies after 30 seconds),
no warning beeps before the alarm is fully set off (to be honest, this is sort of impossible because there are no sensors to trip)

The stock alarm is the most minimal of security... think of it more like remote keyless entry with domelight supervision.

Check the sig to see how much good the factory alarm did me.

tip: get the best alarm you can afford right now. don't skimp out. the alarm is probably the most important part of the car. i got a Viper 300 and if you thought about it, you could easily figure out how to break in and steal the car. it was just an extention of the factory.

my current alarm is a Clifford AG4. has everything including remote start. i leave my car in a parking garage at work and don't even worry about taking the face off of my deck because of my alarm. that and it's motorized.
