MPG Question

Hi, I'm new here. Bought my first Maxima couple weeks ago. 99 GLE. I've been reading the past posts and found this topic missing. How do I get the most MPG out of the car? If necessary, I'd be willing to trade a little performance. (did I really say that?!?!?) Considering the vehicle that I replaced, I could give up 20% of the performance and still feel like I was in a rocket sled.
ThanX.

Some mods like Bpipes etc will actually increase the MPG by a little here and there. Like B pipes for example under normal driving can give you the extra 3-4mpg or so. Other things like Ypipe some people notice an additional 3mpg or so. As long as your driving style doesnt become harder you should see gains with things like these.

most mods done to your car will make your car more fuel efficient......get a y pipe and a cold air intake and a b pipe - and you shall enjoy a slight increase in your miles:gallons ratio

Long ago I had a 87 Grand National. It's a sad story. I swapped a new chip into it that altered the timing advancement, air fuel mix etc to boost the performance. I was wondering if such a thing is available to boost the fuel economy. Can't for the life of me remember where it came from.
Thanks again. I'll go back and reread the faqs and find out what B and Y pipes are.

If your car is a 99 it's probably in pretty good shape, but the best way to get good mpg is maintenence. If you have a clean fuel filter, PCV valve, good knock sensor, etc. your car will get good mpg. Mods are generally aimed more at the performance crowd and yield slight increases, but we're not talking anything major. Running 92 octane gas will also help things run smoothly and will net you more mpg than 87

Um, regarding the increase in mileage due to Ypipe, Bpipe, etc..it's not quite 3-4mpg. Well, maybe if you drive a 5-spd and upshift really early, but with an automatic (he says he drives a 99 GLE) you will not notice any mileage improvement. I noticed zero difference in gas mileage when I added the ypipe.

One of the replies is correct in that proper maintenance and a light foot will get you the best fuel economy. Unfortunately, there is no miracle 3-4mpg boost you can get with any mod.

Ahh, I see now the he is automatic. I myself am a 5 speed driver and probably why I noticed the increase. Good eye on that one.

I second that notion. Additionally, a clean throttle body helps, too.

odd

with mods i loose mielage. well excluding highway mielage.
What i do GAIN is fuel effiency..as in same amount of fuel for more power. But i dont gain in mielage. They usually dont relate.

Easy things:

-Check and maintain proper air pressure (check when the tire is cold)
-Clean air filter
-Do regular service (60K mile is important, but on your 99 that won't be for a while)
-Don't leave junk (aka added weight) in your car.

The first two are BIG issues, I was getting crappy gas milage and then I clean my filter on my CAI and added air to my tires and my milage was much higher.
