What is 0201+0304+0701?
What is 0201+0304+0701?
Sorry, not a math question.
My CEL came on about a month ago, but it was very cold
and I didn't want to try to figure out how to get the ECU codes for the first time while getting frostbite, especially since there was no obvious change in behavior, so I put it off initially. A few weeks later I noticed the CEL blinking occasionally, than last week the engine started shuddering intermittently. It finally got warm enough so I fumbled my way through the codes and got these three
, which is two more than I was expecting to deal with...
0201: Ignition Signal Primary Circuit Fault
0304: Knock Sensor or Circuit Fault
0701: Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
It makes sense that the engine shakes with a misfire, and I know 0304 has been the subject of much recent debate, but where do I start with this particular combo?
It has 53K miles, and the fuel and air filters were changed 6 months ago, but the plugs haven't been changed yet. Should I start with new plugs, or would that be counterproductive and just mask something I need to catch? Should I reset the ECU or leave the CEL on for now?
Btw, after you get the ECU codes, where in the turn range do you leave the screw? There seemed to be no specified "click" point or anything and the sticker mentioned something about setting the idle speed. Did I inadvertantly change my idle speed? Are you supposed to just punch through the sticker to get codes? I have a 99 with the small plastic phillips screw on the driver's side if that makes any difference. Thanks.

Sounds like you have some serious ignition trouble. The K/S code was probably tripped because of the misfires detected. The first thing I would do is reset the ECU to see if it gives you the CEL again. You do have to cut through or peel back the sticker and gently turn the screw about 3/4 turn until it stops . There isn't a "click". Turn it all the way in both directions once to get the codes and twice (maybe more) to reset the ECU.
I would definitely get new OE plugs (NGK PFR5G-11. $56.23+ tax for the set at courtesyparts.com) with a problem like you have described to totally eliminate them as a cause.

In the owner's manual, it says if this happens you have to limit
your driving speed (forget how slow) and get the car checked out
immediately.

Replacing your knock sensor is a pain but something you can do in about 15 minutes. Do a search on the foum here to find out info about it. That will get rid of at least one of your problems. You can order one from www.courtestyparts.com for around 140 if you mention maxima.org. Otherwise it is $170
