Aftermarket Clutches vs. Brand New stock clutches....HELP?

just checked prices on aftermarket clutches and they seem to be cheaper...well the ones i've seen...i know there are a few that are a lot more expensive than stock clutches but what's the dissadvantage with aftermarket clutches? I've seen many reviews that 4th generation clutches tend to slip at high shifting (4th to 5th gear)....and i've hear nothing bad about aftermarket clutches...in fact, this one here:

http://www.mopedhospital.com/clutch.html

only 110 bucks and seems like it does a good deal of work for the buc...but i always thought they were like really expensive...someone let me know of their past experiences with aftermarket clutches and new stock clutches....

IF ANYONE HAS any clutch they use now and would recommend for like 300 or under...please let me know...conversion is around the corner and i'm trying to get this clutch done now that trans is coming out....

would u guys recommend me sticking with clutch that came wit 5 speed trans? it's from a 99 maxima.....

THANKS IN ADVANCE

I would go ACT, i haven't heard any bad things with them for our cars as opposed to Centerforce. I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions on this however. As for me, I just received my new clutch yesterday:

I should just be around $300 or so.

BTW - did you put in a 5-speed in your GLE?

here's another one....

A little too costly for me right now but with long hard searching, i think i can find it a little cheaper...then again it's coming wit all these extra pieces which i won't have to buy from junkyard so it might even out...what do you guys think?

That ACT, is that the one you have Chunger? u paid 300 for it? Hmm....i might go for that...I didn't do conversion YET but i plan on doing it by end of next month.....

STOP BEING CHEAP!!!!

I really dont mean to flame you or anything but if you're going through the trouble of swapping out an auto for a manual tranny, why would you even consider cheaping out on the clutch. Its very expensive to get a clutch changed (about $300 depending on where you go). Rather than making price your guideline you should focus on quality. Quality will save you $$$ in the long run. Imagine when you start modding and adding more power and the cheap clutch you chose starts to slip, I'm sure you'll wish that you paid good money for a decent unit. ACT comes highly recommended from Maxima owners so that would be a good place to start. I recently got the ACT from www.Groupbuycenter.com for about $327 and I thought that was a great deal. Check around you may be able to get it for that price too.

How many hours of labor will it take a guy (the average dude at the dealerships that work on them 8 hours a day) to install a new clutch and all the related parts?

hehe that moped clutch was hilarious.. hehehe

umm I've heard alot of Good things about JWTs clutch Matthel is selling one on the FS Forum

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=111928

stock feel with alot more capability

honestly tohugh if ur not supercharged and not fixed up or you dont drive too hard stay with the stock clutch

I have 56k on my stock clutch and compared to ACTs I love it haha the aftermarket clutches are great for driving hard... but trust me traffic in LA with an ACt stage 2 or stage 3 is a pain in the monkey hole

did some research

i think i'm going to go wit ATX clutch...i've seen it as low as 345 till the guy above saw it cheaper....my major conern now is that the ATX MIGHT not be exactly the same as the regular clutch so although this clutch fits on regular cars built for stick, how would it fit on mine seeing i'm doing a conversion....i'm pretty sure it should fit cause it's exactly the same right? just want to make sure...go through all this trouble and get a clutch that won't even fit....i'm speaking dumbness, it has to fit...just need someone else to tell me this....

ALSO, MORE IMPORTANT!!!

the dude that saw it for 327, what came with it? the place where i see other clutches, they come with....

Pressure Plate
Clutch Disc
Throw-out Bearing
Pilot Bearing or Bushing (when applicable)
Alignment Tool

does the ATX come with all this?

And 2ndMAX, thanks for your input, you are right, i gotta spend right wit a clutch and that's what i'm going to do...i'm going get ATX....as long as it would come with all these parts...

Use ACT or JWT. You can't go wrong with these two! Why would you consider anything else? If you search, the majority of people use ACT and are happy. I myself am going for JWT only because the stage II claims to hold over 400 ft-lbs or torque.

I personally like ACT. If you talk to the people there, they will not try to sell you something they don't know for sure is going to work. Clutchmasters is an alternative, but I have heard of issues with them shipping incorrect parts.

Don't waste time and money, get an ACT or JWT for around $325.

I have a ACT clutch I got it from Phoung for $349.00 I dont know where others are getting theirs for $49.00 less, it would be nice to know. I am happy with it, and when I was at the track my shaft was not seated properly and I was chirping my tires in 4th gear. The ACT clutch is very soft like the stock one to press on. Go with a ACT clutch, even if your not S/Ced or have Turbo. You wont regret it.

Chunger ensure you replace the Differential oil seals that connect the shaft to the transmission (I just looked the name of the seal in the Manual). They are round and are as big as that throw out bearing. They are about $12.00 from the dealership.

FOUND CLUTCH KIT AT NEW CHEAP PRICE!!!!

http://www.cnw.com/~redline/RedlinePROformance.htm

this place has clutch kits at a real cheap price!!

they have two types, the 6 puck one and the street mod one but they both work only for maxima's 86-94 but have same percantage increase like the ones for 4th gen maxima's....I'm going to call them up next week to see if they are for real and if it will work with 4th gen but before i do...just want to get your insights on these...first off, will these work for my 4th gen? maybe they just put mis print? second, which one should i be looking at? street mod or 6 puck? and these are the full kits like the ones we have been discussing all this time right?

You don't want the 4 puck or 6 puck. You want the "Street" clutch if you want your tranny to survive. The street is also the lightest of the bunch so it's better for everyday driving.
You want the ACT clutch kit, 89-99, Heavy duty PP/Organic disc, "NM1-HDMM". I suggest you get it from Phuong as well http://www.eatricezone.com/other01.html . I really love my ACT and it ran great all night at the track tonight.

If you do a lot of city driving, the heavy pressure plate is not the way to go. Get the modified street disc set up. This is experience from a lot of people and seems to make a lot of sense!

Shipping was free to me because I am a return custom to Phuong. I buy as much as I can from him because he is an honest vendor and has great service. I got it in like 2 weeks, but at the time the ACT was on backorder so I couldn't have gotten it anywhere anyway. If he has them in stock (which he usually does) then you could probably have it in a few days.

Jay25, thanks for the advice... I'll try to get those parts before I had it over to my mechanic. (I'll do a S/C but I'm not gonna try tranny work... LOL)

I paid $325 for my ACT but I had to pull a favor.

Meccanoble, like everyone says... don't get the 4 or 6 puck ones... they aren't to streetable. Besides... I don't think your engine makes over 362lbs? of torque that the ACT NM1-HDMM kit can handle.

Searching for a deal is great, but trying to get free shipping is a little overboard :P First of all shipping isn't very expensive and if you have the money for the 5spd. conversion you have the money for shipping. Phuong's free shipping to customers is also a courtesy and you haven't purchased anything from him yet. You still have much to learn about the world.

Support good suppliers (even if they aren't the "cheapest" ones you can find). Good customer support/service is hard to find... trust me. A few bucks isn't gonna hurt you.

the 4 and 6 puck discs are cheaper than the street discs; there's no need for the race discs in the Maxima since the street discs hold the torque.

Shipping for free or not, it still sounds like Phoung has the best deal out there. Everyone who has beaten his price had to call in favors. When I finally get off my *** and decide to relace mine, he's getting a call from me, especially considering he comes highly recommended on this board.

meccanoble...

let me throw in another recommendation for phuong. i never bought anything from him before i bought my act. GREAT GUY TO WORK WITH. my clutch died and i needed one fast since this is my daily driver. i needed phuong to 2 day airmail the clutch to me and he did (i paid for it - only $20 i think good deal). and you know what? it ended up coming next day. how's that for service.

search for the cheapest price all you want but in the end you're saving what... $10 - 20 on a $300+ item. internet vendors can be really shady and unreliable. when you find one that offers fast shipping and great customer service and support... support them in return. otherwise - that act for $300 won't be such a good deal when it takes you 6 weeks to get it. my .02

I almost bought an ACT from Phuong. Unfortunately, he didn't have any in stock at the time I needed it. I have heard nothing but praise about him. Like CKNY said, get it from him... he's a known reliable source. I have not ordered anything from him ... YET ... just my 0.02

thanks for the support guys. I've got early symptons of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome on my right thumb/wrist so typing/writing/shipping stuff out isn't as easy as it once was. I've lost about 50% use of my right arm so I won't be on the forum until/if this crap goes away since it's too hard to type with one hand

yes, it definately stiffened up a bit. it's still pretty easy to depress the clutch but once you start releasing it you have to actually use some force against it to let it out smoothly otherwise it's stall city! it actually takes some concentration unlike the stock clutch but i'm sure that's because i'm not too used to it yet. once i get used to it it'll be second nature.

btw - i brought my car to a car wash before the subaru meet and the guy that drove my car through stalled it twice haha.

him: "is that one of them racing clutches ya got yerself 'dere?"

me: "yup."

him: "car must be pretty dang fast to need a racing clutch..."

me: "yup."
