Need help choosing brake pads!

Ok everyone -- I've searched the forums for the past 45 minutes, and the info I've gotten has been inconclusive, so I need some advice on brake pads.

I'm looking for a relatively high performance (i.e. fairly aggressive driving but no track use) brake pad that dusts as little as possible, and I'd like to be able to pick it up at a local auto parts store (NAPA, Autozone, etc.) I'm in the Atlanta area if that makes any difference.

Any suggestions?

Possible choices based on what I've read:
  • Porterfield R4S (Dusts too much?)
  • Axxis Metal Masters
  • Axxis Ultimate (Can I get this locally?)
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, man. How much do they run for a full set, where can I get them, and how bad do they dust? (I really, really hate brake dust!)

the bendix pads that i got (NOT titanium), just regular, SUCK really badly. they squeak like a ****, even after applying craploads of anti squeak compound, and they also dust really badly in the front. bendix pads in general are the cheapest you can buy, so don't expect too much. again, I have not had experience with the titanium bendix pads, so they might be good, i have no idea.

The Nissan OEM better pads ( not the s--t key pads) to me are the best. Got 27,000 miles on the fronts and 45,000 on the rears before changing them.

Raybestos Quiet Stop. I've heard these live up to their name, but I dunno about the brake dust factor.

Info on Bendix Titaniumetallic Pads

Bendix Titanium Metallic Pads are great pads. I have them and sold Bruce my extra set. They dust just like regular Nissan pads. Not much dust at all. They brake hard without fade. I've had them for about 1 1/2 years now of HARD driving and braking and still have over half of the pad left. No noise at all either.

You can get them at Trak Auto, part number MKD-430IQ. They are about $28.00 for the fronts. They come with a lifetime warranty, so when they go bad, you can get more for free.

I chose the Porterfield R4-S

Just got them, not installed yet. Waiting on my Brembo slotted rotors in shipping. Don't know about local pickup or dusting (by personal experience yet), but I did a lot of research & everyone seems really pleased with these pads.

I, too was concerned about excessive brakedust when choosing a pad, but also wanted uncompromising performance.

I am replacing Stillen Metal-Matrix, which I have learned are simply re-badged Axxis Metal-Masters. THEY DUST A LOT! That wouldn't be too bad, except for the fact that the dust is a nasty "reddish" color and always made the wheels look hideous in about 3 days. My research also suggested that the Hawk pads dust the same way, so all three of these were OUT, afai[was]c. I found out this type of dust is associated w/ all semi-metallic pads.

Further, I learned that carbon-kevlar pads don't generate this nasty red dust, so. . .

If dust is your PRIMARY concern, get the OEM pads. If you are willing to tolerate some dust for the sake of great performance, take a look at the Porterfield Carbon Kevlar (R4-S) http://www.porterfield-brakes.com, or the KVR Carbon Kevlar http://www.kvrperformance.com/world/world.html

I chose the Porterfields over the KVR's mainly because there was more of a history (more individual accounts of positive feedback) on them from Maxima drivers.

Good luck w/ your choice.

I jus put the Raybestos on yesterday. Have a bit more bite then stocks. Supposed to be no dust and they are VERY QUIET! I want heads to turn whe I take off....not when I stop!

Hate to tell you this man, but I have the Porterfields and they dust a reddish color.

Ferodo Selectras. They are better than Axxis MM in every way: They're quieter, dust less, and have more bite. $35 from partsamerica.com

Reeeeeaally? Oh well, here we go again. At least I know it's a kick-azz, take-no-prisoners pad. That will give me some consolation. Thanks for the feedback, n-e way.
