I got smoked by a new highly modified 5spd Mustang GT

I got smoked by a new highly modified 5spd Mustang GT tonight. I reved at the light and he roles down his window and say's, you don't want to race me unless you have a lot of NOS or a blower. I was like ahh.. let's go! Then he say's ok, I won't use my 100 Shot of NOS though, haha. We get all reved up waiting for what seemed like years for the light to turn green, it finaly does! He literaly took off like a slingshot and got a instant 2 car lead on me, I on the other hand had a nice launch but it coould not compare to his high power RWD setup. He just continued to shoot out ahead like no other!! He really smoked me bad, by about 75 MPH he had about 7+ car lengths on me! At the next light I was like sweet ride! What do you have on it? He told me the whole engine was built up with all sorts of parts, he also had gears and a bunch of other stuff. The sad part is he did not even use his 100 shot! His car looked like a 12 second car with out the NOS, with it he's probably right around 11 seconds. Crazy!

Next car I get is going to be RWD with alteast 300 HP! FWD really has it's limits.

LOL, nice run. Well at least you were both cool about it. Wow!! Imports and domestics getting along, no middle fingers, etc.!

Yep, FWD definitely does have its limits

The guy seemed really nice, it was funny when he said for me not to bother racing unless I had NOS or a SC. I was chukling inside saying to myself wait until he get's a taste of this! LOL! The tables turned rather quickly once the light turned green though.

maximas = slow

unless you are don in texas, mardigrasmax, steve in chicago, shadow, or a few others that run low 13's or 12's.

the maxima does not have the build up possibilities that a mustang has.. it's no fun, because you never know which part they ordered from summit, but yet we only have 3 from custommaxima or stillen.

A Maxima is so refined compared to a Mustang. Just had to say something positive. Oh yeah, stop street racing!

The new Mustangs do take well to mods though.

A note to those who like to go up against Mustangs >>

Don't ever square off with any ordinary-looking Mustang GT that has a Sean Hyland sticker on the windshield and a little S2 badge on the liftgate...

Yup. Another reason I do not like this car at all. Not only is it FWD, we dont have anything when it comes to performance parts. And the parts that do exist either are ripped off or have huge problems or both. The ONLY joy i'll ever get out of driving it is beating someone expecting to toast you. But then again they just think I'm driving my mom's old car anyway.

I've raced several 00-02 Mustangs...and all the stock ones I beat. Most of the Mustangs that I see that are suped up won't even go at it. They just cruise. But, all the new ones with maybe a new cat I keep up with and beat, I'm sure if we hit like over 90 that they would start passing me but I seem to pull about 1/2-1 car lenght on them. But then again maybe I'm racing people that don't know how to race or possible automatics...I'm just saying the majority of GT's that I've raced I've beaten.

Amen to that.

Nothing like a neck snapping launch and hitting boost right away and having a second turbo kick in right after.

Ethan-
Was it the newest bodystyle Stang? There's really not much you can do to those cars compared to the 5.0. The heads are already high flowing, the cams are fairly aggressive, and the intake manifold is pretty decent. Simply put, the 99+ SOHC 4.6 is pretty hard to modify because Ford did some great things with the 4.6 in 99. A full exhaust, gears, and most importantly a well setup suspension with sticky tires will easily put a 99+ GT in the low low 13s or high 12s. I would bet he hit the happy gas just to teach you a lesson or to expand a lead he was a bit worried about. I've faced modded 99+ GTs at the track and they barely pull away up top. It's the 0-60mph that hurts ..

DMBMaxima-
99-00 Cobra convertible?!?! Are you crazy? You would a FOOL to pick a car that is known to be rated well below published power figures, even with the "fix". BTW, there was no 00 Cobra. Ford suspended assembly while they figured out why the 99 Cobra was so slow (mid 14s at barely 97mph). The problem with the 99+ Cobra is that it's HEAVY, especially the convertible. A little high winding 4.6 V8 320hp (actually ~300hp) is gonna have a hard time pushing a 3500lb car. The independant rear suspension is scary junk. If you've ever seen a 99+ Cobra launch at the track, you'll understand why it's scary. On a hard launch, the wheels hop up and down, forwards and backwards. Many guys have snapped half-shafts on 3000rpm launches. The independant rear is also very hard to add gears to which is something the DOHC needs to perform well. The stock 3.27 gear is way too tall for the DOHC motor. 4.10s are good and 4.33s are ideal. If you were smart, you'd get a 98 Cobra. They are lots faster and have a live axle which can take massive amounts of abuse and gear swaps are a snap. A 99+ Cobra would have hard time beating your Maxima. That's sad. A 98 Cobra with a X-pipe, pullies, MAF, 4.10-4.33 gears, adjustable shocks, and slicks will hit 12s.

i heard abotu the power problem but i also read that they fixed it fien and they were putting down exactly the power that they should be. i know the convertible is slower but it's so hot, chicks will dig it hard. 14.2 with the fixed engine in a convertible, although i did hear that the indy rear makes the car hop hop hiop a lot. hmm now your making me think again dave. damn you, why do you have to make me thing. i found a 99 with 4.10 and a catback and rollbar though. i don't know. so many decsions, HELP ME.

Just think how it would have been with your old car! I bet you would've given him a pretty good run for his money.

Steve:

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the DOHC Cobras. I just think you could spend your money more wisely on a 98 Cobra convertible and can easily go 13s with little to no mods. You'd save a bunch of money which you could put towards mods right away. Whether or not you like the older 95-98 bodystyle might be a problem. I've ridden in both the 98 Cobra and a 99 Cobra and the 99 was a bit harsher riding which was surprising. I would love to have a 98 Cobra with NO spoiler (was a $500 dollar option on the Cobra), gears, X-pipe, lowered, and full time drag radials

With equal driver ability a new stock Mustang GT would be neck and neck with my modded 6spd max. I think the mustang would have a little advantage still but it would be a real close race.

DaveB, hmm, maybe he did spray? It sure seemed a lot faster then I expected. My buddy's modded 95 GT is door to door with me, nothing like the beast I raced! . BTW my friend wiyth the 95 GT blew his engine, now IIRC he said he is getting a 342 stroker engine or something(I think out of a cobra?). It's a $5000 project and it is supposed to produce about 350 + RWHP.

Steve, make up your mind! Your car crazy, I have the same problem from time to time too. No matter what you get you will want something different. I just try my best to screen out the urges to get something different. I say keep the max for a few years and then try something else

no i think the Z is it and final this time if i can get one for the right price and lower mileage. i lokoed at one EVERYTIME i've bought a car and even when i wasn't planning on it, in march 2001 when i started thinking NOS on the 95 i said i can sell it and get a 90-91 300zx and chip and be all set but i didn't now i can get a newer one and get a truck in the winter and drive that when it's gonna snow. the max is a fast, nice comfy car but it's doesn't have the ***** attracting power of a 300ZX TT with T-tops. i'm driving a 81 vette now and it just looks hot and EVERYONE looks at me around town. i love it.

ya they look hot but after trying to get out of this car and the hassles of loosing so much money on a new car i won't buy another new car for a while. i like the TT part and Hicas Steering. TT=2k for chip intake and exhuast=400hp and a Great handling car for 10k or more less then a new Z.

I guess Emax might have still lost, but he sure would have surprised that Mustang guy...0-60mph in 5.4 secs on the G-Tech for the old s/c'd car, if I'm not mistaken.

Not to knock other cars but...

Not to knock other cars but when I buy I look for cars that have more attributes beyond being fast and handle well. There are times while on the road one can't go fast or drive like a racer (eg. when future mother in law is in the car). With some cars, there are any good points beyond being fast or furious. For example, I don't see why people would by non-turbo Talons, non GT Mustangs, non AWD Audis. It's like buying a car without it's 'Forte'. Hope I didn't offend anyone. When I got the Maxima I know it is a great package. There are other cars that are faster, or handles better. Other cars might look better, or have greater 'status symbol' level.
But I enjoy a car that I can drive alone, or carry 4 other people. I like to step on it at times, and take some mild corners fast. I enjoy the luxurious interior, and had nothing but praises about the car. Now if I have the $$ for a second car, surely I would look for a fast car :-)

It would have definatly been a little closer I still would have gotten smoked though I hope Nismo makes a SC or something for my new max!

most 2k2 6-spd would beat all 94-98 fairly stock gt's and it would be close with the 99-up gt's not a waste in my book.
