Elantra GLS Wagon...? Turbo!?
Elantra GLS Wagon...? Turbo!?
I've got a little "who would win" question that I'm guessing a lot of you are going to find pretty funny. A "friend" of mine who happens to drive an Elantra GLS (I think that's what I read on the back?? I have no idea what the trim levels are for Elantra's, so maybe not) Wagon, the same one who almost killed me about a week and a half ago, stopped by my house earlier today to apologize about what happened (and drop off a check to pay for the damages
).
Anyway, he was looking my Maxima and he liked it and we eventually got into talking about his car. I know for a fact this guy has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to cars and I also know (at least, I'm pretty sure) his Elantra is 100% stock. After a little while he told me that he had a "turbo" put on a week ago. Of course, he wouldn't answer any questions about it or let me look under the hood. But he insisted I go for a drive with him. So he's driving around town, nice and slow, and eventually he goes up on the highway. He floors it, getting the automatic to downshift (after a little lag) and claiming "the turbo just kicked in".
Overall, it was pretty funny. I convinced him to come down to the track with me next week and get some 1/4 times and see how his "turbo" Elantra stands up to the Maxima (and anyone else who might be around). I've never driven this car, but from sitting in the passenger seat it feels week. It's auto (like me
) and I believe it's a 2000. Here's my question: What should I expect? Obviously I know there's no serious competition, but I'm curious if anyone knows what to expect from a stock Elantra. If he still refuses to let me look at his engine I want to at least be able to say that his times are on par (or worse) than stock times with some authority.
Anyone know?
(if not, I at least hope you had a good laugh at my "friend"
)

But, seriously, no one has any idea what to expect from an Elantra? I remember hearing that the 5-speeds can do high 16's stock... but I don't know about the auto's.
