Engine drones between 3200 and 3500 RPM W/ Y-pipe and stock exhaust.
I just drove to Florida from Mass, and will be driving home tomorrow. Everything went well except I noticed my engine is noticably louder between 3200 and 3500 RPMs. The sound seems to be coming from under the hood. I know this is a very small range but in my 5 speed Max it happens to be about 78 to 85 MPH and I like to travel just over 80 on the highway. Above 85 the car gets very quite again, but this is a little faster than I like to drive (mostly for risk of tickets).
I never did any extended high speed trips before the Warpspeed Y pipe went on so I don't know if the car did this before. Other than the Y-pipe my exhaust is stock and it is the newer lined flex section. I doubt I will be able to do anything before the trip home but I figured I will ask anyway.

Nope, stock intake. I plan on adding a B-pipe and CAI soon so that will probably change the sound of the engine quite a bit. It was just on a 20+ hour trip the sound got a little annoying. I was waiting on the CAI and B pipe until this trip was over so if it ended up louder than I wanted I would not have to deal with it on the long drive.
I notice on my 99 5spd that there's some sort of "resonance" sound at that RPM range and I'm completely stock right now. I notice it too but it's not loud enough to bother me. The Y-pipe must just let more of that resonance noise through now.
Just drive 85 or faster

Uh, the CAI will overpower ANY exhaust sound you're hearing now. Don't worry, it's only at WOT. At steady cruising, the CAI is just about as quiet as stock.
I'm like you, I want all the exhaust mods but none of the noise. I'm contemplating a B pipe now, but definitely with a resonator.
Keep your stock muffler, or get a 2K1 muffler. Those will keep your exhaust tunes in check.
By the way, your car's the same color as mine, but in the sig pic, it looks blue??

That's what I suspected, that it's a 'resonance' sound with the stock intake/exhaust and possible made louder by the y-pipe. It is not really enough to bother me most of the time, but on a 20+ hour highway drive it did start to get annoying. But I am home now and I will just wait and see how the Max sounds with a CAI.
