I bid farewell...bought a Jetta 1.8t

Well guys, I bid farewell. My time in a Max was great but my lease is up and I decided to get a Jetta. I just bought a Back on Black 1.8T 5-speed with luxury, leather, sport and monsoon packages. Getting a GIAC chip in a few months and I'll see what this thing can do. Unfortunately the payments on a new Max were just too much for me to deal with now.

This is a great forum and resource page for Maxima enthusiasts. I've learned a lot here. Keep it up.

Nice car, and I like your way of leaving. Very respectful, unlike some people. Enjoy, the new car, and you still have my respect.

Out of curiousity, how much more for a VR6 and how much more for a Passat 1.8T? VW's definitely have that German feel to them which the Maxes don't. Parts are expensive--we just helped a hottie girl at work with her brakes and I'll tell you this much, the pads for a Passat were discounted and still more than the list price for Maxima pads!!

GLS 1.8T - $23,500
GLS VR6 - 24,150
GLX VR6 - 27,975
Passat GLS 1.8T - $25,805
all similarly equipped.
Personally don't like the Passat. I guess with a kit and wheels it could be ok.

I'm actually trying to decided wether to get the the VW (Votex) body kit. That lets me build it into the payments without my wife going ballistic.

Just out of curiosity, what are your payments for the VW (just like you have it). My wife loves that car and I was thinking of maybe getting it for her.

How much HP/TQ do the new Jetta's have? Drop that chip in there and that car would be a sleeper.
Congrats on the new purchase.

Congrats on the new purchase.
Midyear( nxet month i think ) the VR6 is getting bumped from 177 horse to 201 with the 5 speed going to the 6 speed. should help the jetta a lot.

The GLX VR6 already has the 201hp. Drove one and very smooth. Nice growl to it. But I want something different and potentially faster.

The 1.8T is 180hp stock. A 1bar chip should add 35hp and 85ft/lbs according to GIAC. $500 for the chip. AWE tuning told me to add a cat back after that for the biggest gain.

The msrp was $23600 and I'm getting it for $21973. Depending on lease or buy, you can figure your payments. residual is 57%.

OMFG! I thought the Jetta was equivalent to the Honda Civic. 6-cyl Jetta is 28k? Wow, you could get a Toyota Matrix, have a 6-spd and save 5 grand.

Maybe it's just me but I'd rather have a new RS-X type S than a Jetta GLS 1.8T.

Great car

My wife and I bought a Jetta last year, 2001. Great car. currently, I am working on her (my wife) so i can start modding the Jetta too.

Have fun and good luck! Also, enjoy the braking ability of the Jetta. The brakes on those cars are so much different than the Max's.

Good luck!

I bought this two weeks ago for my wife

The lower payments and better gas milege on the Jetta are welcomed since I got this gas pig. Have to stimulate the economy...I'm doing my part.

Yeah you could have gotten a Se 6spd for $24k or so, but I understand the Jetta is well-equipped and the Maxima would have been stripped. Have fun with the new car, just make sure to visit.

My wife has the same! She avg's about 12mpg if she is lucky. Luckily she has had it for 1 yr, and we are in a 2yr lease.

Moddin the Jetta!

Did anyone else read the car magazine article about a year ago about the 490HP 4WD New Beetle? They mentioned in the article they can do the mods to anything w/ that frame......Bug, Audi TT, Jetta Now that would be a sleeper! Too bad it cost some really obscene amount, I wanna say 26K for the conversion....(you might have to sell the wifes SUV to pay for it)
Just a thought

I bought one too.

After my insurance settled with me, I purchased a Jetta 1.8T. I have the exact same packages as you. The 17's, sport package, moonsoon system, etc. The car has tons of torque. 180 hp stock and a $500 dollar APR chip raises that to 215hp. It is a great car and damn fun to drive.

Actually, the 4th gens will be getting beaten by that thing, not sure about how fast they are stock but I'm sure with a few aftermarket things....

And the Jetta is actually a nifty car, I don't like the Passat as much inside, the Jetta has a nicer interior in my opinion, also my friend has a Golf and it's very nice for what it is, although over priced.

thats wierd, seems like the board actully likes jetta 1.8Ts. usually by now this thing would have turned into a huge flame war including guys from the 1.8t board.
